Tweeter replacement on jbl synthesis system

So I changed my front tweeters from stock to these today:

However, I am having the same problem that caused me to want to change them in the first place... It sounds so scratchy/staticy at high volumes. I thought for sure it was those old and cracking tweeters. But these sound only marginally better.

A bit of info:

I reused the stock wiring harnesses. Spliced in and heat shrink wrapped, connections were solid.

Had already installed newer 6x9 coax speakers in the front doors.

Had already removed (not replaced) the center dash speaker as it too was blown, and it also made room for my HU to breathe.

Head unit is a Pioneer sph-da120.

Had replaced factory sub and added amp - powers the sub only. (This is the only part of my audio system that sounds great :D)

So, my question is why does it still sound terrible at high volume? I can tell it is coming from the tweeters. They sound scratchy and distorted at similar volume levels as with the stocks... I didn't put in the rears yet because the fronts sound so bad. These tweets got great reviews on several websites and have built in crossover, so it shouldn't be the issue, right?

My HU has some eq + crossover settings that I have messed with a bit and seems to help, but with this setting off, I still wouldn't expect them to sound so bad.

Thinking now I may have a bad connection somewhere else... Any thoughts??

I just want to be able to turn my music up loud and not hear distortion, it's been so long, lol.:shrug:

Maybe factory amp is bad or the adapter that connects your HU to that amp is bad.

need a frequency cap on the tweeter to filter out the bass. find a crossover that comes with the tweeter. then use that and see if the sound changes.
 
You replaced the fronts already with coax which has a built in crossover for the tweeters. In adding another set of tweeters, you Must have either a crossover or capacitor on them. Otherwise, your sending all frequencies including bass which will fry those tweeters in no time.

So, even though these say they have a capacitor built in to block low fq, I would need a seperate?
Also, using the factory wiring from the stock tweeter, looks like there is a capacitor in line there as well. Am I mistaken?

I should be able to turn the volume to at least 75% with no distortion, no?
 
In researching this issue I came across a couple of potential issues, any thoughts?:

1. The 6x9 front coax speakers I have are 2ohm and the tweets are 4ohm.
2. The 6x9 are hooked with the factory wiring/crossover (I think - how can I confirm?), so if highs are being blocked this may cause me to have to turn the vol up louder than I should have to?

If your utilizing the factory harness then yes, you already have a cap in line.
However, the crossover frequency may still be too low.
The Toyota tweeter is a 3" and can handle some mid frequencies and you've installed a 1/2" tweeter. I'm thinking that the crossover frequency needs to be raised.
And those tweeters you have are a very low 72.5db efficiency so you really have to jam them to hear them.

What 6x9's did you install? I've never heard of a 2 ohm 6x9.

The 6x9 I got are JBL GTO938, from the prod. description:
Peak: 600 watts per pair / 300 watts each RMS: 200 watts per pair / 100 watts each Frequency response: 45-21,000 Hz 2 ohms impedance Sensitivity: 94 dB

What i noticed today is that my front 6x9 were actually not even hooked up! :frusty:
The connections in the speaker housing were undone, that white box (crossover?) came loose and pulled the wires out... after i fixed this (hot glued and taped it in place), WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I didn't realize that all sound in the front was being pushed out of the tweeters LOL... Lesson learned, don't take any shortcuts installing new speakers, should have properly secured that white box the first time :dizzy:

So now a follow up question, is that white box a crossover blocking high fq? Should i bypass it to get better sound from my 6x9 speakers?
