I got my 1996 SR5 in November 2012. Her engine was rebuild at about 242000. I removed the running boards and started painting and touching up all the plastic trim...then nickel and dime'd it over the next few months.

Most important mod so far

I did most of the work over Christmas and Spring breaks. I am really looking forward to summer...three best reasons for being a teacher? June, July, and August. I've got a lot of parts sitting in the garage, so here's the to do list

Suspension:

OME 3", diff drop, new lower ball joints, ITRE, OTRE installed.
LR UCAs installed, rack bushings installed, guide installed and lower control arm bushings installed.

Locker:

Aussie Sitting on shelf. Probably get to this toward the middle of summer. Gonna replace a lot of things in the rear....still researching.

Interior:

Gonna rip everything out and pressure wash the interior along with the carpet (done), install new front seats, cup holder/arm rest mod, and install the stereo (installed)

Armor

4xinnovations front bumper and sliders installed and painted.
Researching skids...

Other:

B and M Trans cooler sitting on a shelf (done). Deck plate Mod (done), Big 3, almost finished with my satoshi mod (finished)...and I've got a CEL for both knock sensors (fixed). I'm going to replace the harness and hope that is it before I spend the cash on two new sensors. Need lights (got a few)...roof rack...rear spoiler (installed)...winch (bought)....tires (got a good deal on some)...weather tech (Merry xmas to me, thanks dad!).

I also have a bunch of parts for the projector retro-fit sitting around because I...can't do that damn mod..

That's about it...for now....

Here comes summer!! Don't ya know it, I've got a 4 day weekend right before I've got a 90 day weekend...dang. I'm going to head to the junkyard on Friday and look for a Taco Whip ant, rear spoiler, tundra brakes, fenders, OEM buttons, aftermarket stuff...I'm sure I'll think of more...headlights...tail lights...hmm.

The junkyard trip was ok. I scored a rear spoiler and some things to do the whip mod...thats about it. The damn junkyard had no later model 4runner so no cupholder....yet.

...and started putting things on today. pics tomorrow.

First off, thank you everyone with all the great information on the site! The build is going great and i couldn't have done it without y'all.

No new picts yet because my phone won't talk to my computer...

I did get the light racing uca s in, rack bushings, lca bushings in.

This week i plan on replacing a cv, work on my shifter and start the Trans cooler, and winch install.

The past two weeks have been busy! PB Blaster soaked everything before I started turning a nut.

My rack bushings were shot! I followed several how to write up here on t4r.org

Everything went as the write ups said they would but I made a bushing press when this didnt work to my satisfaction.

This worked better

After a lot of cussing and that damn vertical bolt everything turned out great. I did start that bolt on the bottom to line it up and then took it out and reinstalled it from the top.

The UCAs went smoothly as well.

The only thing was getting these pliers to line up straight as an arrow but once they were right...you just torque the crap out of them till they pop!

Oh yeah! Gonna use my time wisely this summer and get her finished. Today I am going to replace the cv and take her to the shop to finally get her aligned.

Tomorrow I'll start ripping out the interior and cleaning the carpet, run wires for the stereo, and begin the seat swap.

Jeez Mr. you are on your way to having a sweet ride that the kids can drive and beat on. i really like how you are able to take a very well used vehicle and not be scared to put money into it and drive it even longer.

I started to do the torch method, but then I ran out of propane so I just took them up to the shop and they charged me $60.

Yeah, it has a few dents and dings and the interior is pretty dirty but I dont think it's beyond repair. If the motor hadnt been rebuild I probably would have gone a little more conservative route.

Yes phones talk to computers...or maybe that's some feedback from the NSA I'm hearing...

I love the hill country. I teach Texas History and gotta find a way to get a field trip out to the ol Edwards Plateau.

Busy day and I got interrupted but I did get the axle nut off and installed the Satoshi grill.

So I was laying in bed thinking "sleep, sleep, 4runner, sleep, it'll only take a minute, sleep, sure is gonna be hot in the morning" so why not get up and go put that cv in real quick...its only 2am. Well, it only took me about 30 minutes. I had a little trouble but it all worked itself out.

When I was pulling the disc out to remove it from the cv the cv just kept coming with it and then I heard a pop...

this doesnt look right

Looks like i will be rebuilding this one....some day.

I couldnt find a 35mm socket to get the original nut off so I used a 1 3/8. It worked great but the new socket was 37mm so i just reinstalled the old nut and weird cotter pin thingy.

Now that I have got that done hopefully I can sleep...

Sitting at the shop waiting for them to fix a tire. I went out to see how good a job they did on the alignment and noticed the other cv boot was busted...so guess I'll stop by the parts store on the way home...
