Ultimate Scion Headunit (stereo) thread

So I've gone through this whole thread and went ahead and bought the PT546-00140. When I received all the wiring harnesses and the unit I installed and it wouldn't produce any sound. I discovered the unit was bad. It was heating up a crazy amount (so much it burned my finger!:wtf:) I unplugged everything and I'm sending it back to the ebay vendor.

I'm looking now, and I am wondering what the difference between the PT546-00160 and PT546-00170 is? I'm thinking of going to one of those instead for the bigger and better looking screen. Any help would be great appreciated!!

I had the same result with my junk yard pt546-00140. Everything seemed to work other than the sound. I haven't gotten the antenna adapter yet. I'm gonna call the junk yard in the morning and try another. I didn't leave mine plugged in long since the sound didn't work when I tested it. But my hu didn't get hot.

I just installed the T10071 this weekend and I'm very glad I did (thanks to Simonw and the rest of the brave folks who provided great info in this thread)!

The hardest part is securing all of the parts. Once you've done that, the installation is very straightforward and the results are totally worth it.

I love having a 7" screen, Bluetooth, and HD radio in a unit that fits perfectly in the vehicle.

I've attached some images of my install and the comparison between the two head units.

For those who want to upgrade to the 7" touchscreen version (T10071) I was able to find it on Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market, which aggregates all of the inventory from junkyards. I searched for 2016 Scion's (IM & FRS) under the "Radio/CD" section. You'll see a ton of results, so if you want the 7" touchscreen look for either T10071 or part # PT546-00160. My search today shows at least 20 of them starting from $90.

I found this much cheaper than eBay with much more inventory than Craigslist. I also didn't have time to visit the junkyards near me.

Just note that it may be more effective to call the junkyards instead of emailing them. I got very few responses from the many emails I sent, and the one I did purchase I did so over the phone.

sweet, thanks! just scored a well priced one! i almost threw down on a $250 egay one this morning actually, glad i held out!

now to get all the wiring squared away. I have the JBL system, so i will be running everything off a 5 channel amp (soundstream PN5.640d nano) for this setup, rather than the buggy TATO crap.

should come out money ahead on the upgrade after i flip my e7009 HU!

I was also seeing these on eBay for about $250-300, so I figured this could save quite a bit of money for my fellow T4R peeps!

Shoot, it would be pretty easy to buy a whole bunch of them of car-parts.com then resell them for much more on eBay, but I'm not going to do that since most of the people buying these are likely our fellow 4Runner folks.

where did you get the 26 pin harness or whatever thats needed? I will be installing in a 2005 JBL, but wiring directly to an aftermarket amp in order to skip all the TATO crap.

EDIT: seems i may just need to purchase this 24 pin harness (http://www.ebay.com/itm/272484082708) as it has the 24 pin plug, then i can wire everything off those pigtails?

I have the non-JBL head unit in mine, so unfortunately I cannot help with JBL system guidance. But I believe some others on here have so hopefully the can confirm what you need.

Another question.
I picked up a PT546-00160 as well to replace the bad 140 unit I had. I'm making sure I have all the wiring. which it appears I have everything to do the USB port and the wiring harnesses to get things put together. While doing all of this I was wondering if there is any way to add an aux port as well? I don't have one stock in my car, and I know its not used much anymore compared to USB and bluetooth but I figured I'd check anyway.

thanks guys!

Ok so I swapped the junk yard head unit for another of the same 00140. Installed it with the same results. No sound!
Did I miss something? Do I have to have the antenna adapter for the speakers in my 3rd gen to work? If I hook the factory unit backup without either antenna, I also have no sound.(doesn't even power up) So through process of elimination, I'm assuming I just need to install the antenna adapter. I have one on the way, should be here tomorrow. I also ordered the USB harness as well. Fingers crossed. I will report on my findings tomorrow.

Guess that's what I get for being cheap. I figured since I didn't plan on using the radio I didn't need to spend the extra $60

Ok I solved my problem. Got the antenna adapter and all is good now. Radio works as it should.
Next question. I bought the USB adapter.......what does it adapt to? Because neither end will fit a USB. What USB port does this connect too? I'm not sure if I've mentioned before but I have a 3rd gen.

Hahaha you and I must legit be doing the exact same things at the same time.
I just got on here to ask this same question.

Any help is appreciated! I don't want to have a $60 part that I can't use...

Thanks!

So after responding to you on here I decided to do some hunting to find out what I could. it looks like there is a great writeup over at Ih8mud Linked right here

This shows the two separate options. It looks like you can either cut the cable and solder the wires to a USB cable. Or you can do what the guy did and modify the end of a cheap usb cable.

I ordered a cable extension for my adapter already so I'm going to modify that so it can plug in and I don't need to modify the expensive adapter.

I hope that helps!

Yes it does.....I was under the impression that was only for one of the non touch screen HU. Guess I should have actually read the description before dismissing it. But now I understand it's the connector on the cable I just purchased.

Here's is the progress so far.....

I got a little work done on the bezel. I have a lot of cleaning up to do and make some more adjustments so I can get the bezel back into place, but here's a little progress.

Got my T10017. If anyone is interested in swapping the white LEDs, here is what you're up against. Much easier to get to than the e7009, but man are these small! Not sure if they can be soldered via an iron? May need one of those remelt ovens?

I have an 05 with the JBL setup. I will be installing this T10017, an aftermarket 5 channel amp, no LOC and hopefully reusing the stock JBL speakers, at least to start. Sub is already swapped out for a Polk mm 8" sub. I'll throw up some info as I get parts and complete the install.

I got the PT546-00160 hooked up and working this weekend.
It appears there is a small plug from the trucks wiring harness that doesn't have a plug on the new stereo? I am working with a non JBL setup.

The sound works fine but I wanted to know if I missed something that plug was supposed to plug into or if everything is correct?

Thanks for the help guys!

Pics? "Small plug" is very generic

True.. Sorry didn't think that through.

So I evidently wasn't on my A game putting it in and didn't take a photo. I did however find a photo online of the back of the stock stereo.

The circled plug below was what didn't have a home on the new PT546-00160.
Did I miss something?

Thanks!
