Upgrade '97 RS3000 to Newer System?

Like many- I got my '97 Limited without a FOB.
When I was cycling my ignition the other day, I head that beautiful Toyota alarm "beep"- and saw the security LED lit. That beep just gets me- don't ask.
Anyway, it got me REALLY wanting to get my alarm functioning. I just swapped my beat leather seats out for some nice 99+ cloths. I noticed the RS3000 brain under the seat when I pulled the drivers out- didn't know what it was at the time.
After some research(hours), I believe I need the "black fob" for my system. I've found remotes are around $50. That's fine, but why stop with simple and easy? [emoji854][emoji85]
I really like the look of the newer remotes, and the window down function is sweet too.
I haven't been able to find a thread that shows the different brains side by side, nor do I even know what the newer system is called. Are there only two systems between 97 and 02? Is the RS3200 the version with the roll-down functionality?

Sorry for the long-winded post.
All I really want to know is-
What would be involved in retrofitting the newer system into my rig?

Please, save the "just get a Viper". I have a brand new 2-way remote start Viper in my closet. I really like OEM things though, so I'd like to do this cool(to me) OEM+ retrofit.
Thanks for your time!

I don't think it is doable. The 4-button black fob wireless entry and the window down thing is part of the factory keyless entry on '99+. It is NOT part of the alarm system, the receiver is built in to the Back-door ECU and the brains is built in to the Body ECU by driver's knee. You get that even with no alarm and no separate brain as is the case with my truck.

There is really no way to retrofit those parts to a '97 without doing everything from scratch. The '99+ front communicates with the back over a data bus in a way totally different from the earlier ones. Swapping the Body-ECU would be a huge undertaking, given how many systems are involved. You'd also have to do the window master switch and God knows what else.

The later alarm system was built to add-on to the base '99+ truck and it expects to find keyless entry and the data bus already there. Honestly, I would hate to try this one.

I'd advise you just to get the black RS3000 alarm fob with 2 buttons and call it good.

Yup exactly. Or install a aftermarket alarm. Because the distance on these key fobs are shit. I just installed a viper alarm and have a 2way remote. I like it more and more over the factory. And I simply put the factory alarm in valet mode. So at anytime I can go back.

I've notIced on your sig that your looking for 97 manual ecu. Your easiest and cheapest route. Is car parts website. I picked up a 97 manual ecu for $70 shipped. All I did was use money order to pay and they shipped it out.

Thanks [MENTION=10169]TheDurk[/MENTION], I appreciate the info. I'll just get the lame black remote for now.
That said, I got a manual 99+ cluster that my wife is hounding me to get swapped in, so maybe I WILL end up doing a COMPLETE harness/system swap. Talk about a nightmare. Hah
[MENTION=99565]kolelt[/MENTION], thanks for the ECU info. I'll probably end up going that route [emoji1360]

I'd like to see more pics of that truck.

Build thread?

I would love to see more pics of that rig cause from this angle it look so nice and clean please post more pics!!!!!!

Thanks! I don't have too many pictures of it. Just took that pic when I was swappin out my cracked out Limited seats for the 99+ cloth units last weekend.

It's got 250k miles on it. I know they can last "forever", but next on the list is a 30k mile JDM take-out engine. It would just give me peace-of-mind. We plan on having the runner forever. I have an R150 on the side of the house I'll swap in when I do the engine.

If the engine runs then don't worry about the Jdm. The tranny is going to be nice. I to swapped a r150f into my 97. Check out my thread, there's some useful info I have gathered and shares through my swap experience. It should help you lots because we both have a 97 !

And holy undercarriage !!! It's clean as f***!!

Remember your going to need more then just the tranny for the swap. Feel free to PM If you have any questions.

Yeah, I swapped my 92 from an auto to a 5 speed, 5VZ, dual 4cyl cases, flat belly, etc.
I've done manual swaps in VW's too.
Not new to manual swaps or wiring, but I still appreciate the offer!
I also have saved pictures of what auto wiring I need to use for the clutch switches to make the cruise still work etc. Might need to do some major digging, as that's been a couple years ago that I got the R150 and was researching the wiring.
I've actually had the small/manual brake pedal in for a couple years now too. Haha

Do you know of a good way to get the master cyl holes perfectly positioned on the firewall?
On my 92, I took a piece of cardboard to the junkyard, and made a template from a manual rig. Much harder to find 3rd gen manuals in junk yards... See also: impossible.

Wow what a beautiful rig!!!!! What color code you got on you rig? Oh and whats your set up? I want some 35's on my rig but need to find which lift setup to go with thanks.

Thanks, I appreciate that!

I'd like to hook up my cruise. But I don't know how to do that....

Agreed, that rig is clean! Build thread, please!

Thanks fellas! [MENTION=130956]Pedrojr80[/MENTION], it's the factory color. I don't know what the paint code is, but it's called Anthracite. It was only available 96/97, but they started using it again on newer Tundras, Tacomas, Rav4s, etc.
When we were looking for a 4Runner, we specifically looked for Anthracite- with Black and Tan interior- and hopefully with an e-locker! We found one [emoji1360]
We just got my wife an IS250. We wanted a white 08 with Black and Tan interior. Found one, and picked it up last weekend up near Seattle. We live near the base of Mt. Hood(hour SE of Portland), so that's about 4hrs north. Been wanting a 99+ center console, since we haven't had cup holders in over a year [emoji23] Stopped by Josh(DeathCougar)'s place while we were up north. Loaded the cloth interior and center console up in our newly acquired Lexus [emoji6]
It's a 3" ToyTec front, and 99 tall rears with a 1.5" spacer. I really want coilovers and Superflex coils, but that probably isn't happening soon.
I'll dig through some pictures, and try to get a build thread together- I would like a spot to track progress.
I'd like to hook up my cruise. But I don't know how to do that....

What?! You don't have cruise?!
That's no bueno; I couldn't do that.
I'll see if I can find the info on that for ya [emoji1360]

Hey Durk. Is this the final answer. Are there any other options? Can I (on my 98):
1) Upgrade to a working after market system that wont cause major electrical problems down the road (According to the forum, it doesnt appear so)
2) Upgrade to a better key/fob? Right now I only see two options, the original (selling for about $100) or get a cheap replacement for $20. Neither are great and I would love to get a newer one with a combo key/fob.
3) Can I fix my original fob?

When I first starting having trouble, it was because my original fob was breaking. I bought the $20 Ikeyless Remote which does work, but you have to be within 4 feet of the ECM to get traction. Sucks if you forget where you park. Then I bought a replacement case for the original fob, which has been amazing. But now it has a short in the button. I took it apart last night and did some testing and the button on the circuit board doesn't fire off every press, causing me to press the button like 10 times to interact with the alarm.

Do you know if I can purchase the circuit button and swap/solder it out? Has anyone ever tried this?

Thanks a bunch guys. I love this site.

Hey, sorry for late response. Answer to your last question about master cyl holes. I removed the evap box and all that stuff. I bought (2) master cylinder OEM gaskets. Because there is a small gasket. And if you look at your firewall. There is a indent made already by Toyota. And if you go inside and look at the left of the brake pedal. The rubber carpet is already cut out for the master cylinder. Well pre-cut. So take your OEM gasket and line it up with the indent and trace it with marker. Double check it ( from engine side ) and use a punch to center the holes. Makes it easier to drill.

So long story short. OEM master cylinder gasket.

And for the slave cylinder line. I used a supra line of eBay. It works perfect.
