The trail will have better resale than the SR5 down the road, I would think.
Modding a 4runner to death will kill your MPGs; they'll be very expensive to operate in coming years. Stock trail is darn capable and will maintain MPG.
Test drive a limited while you are at it. Best value in my mind.

Is it me or does the te look like it has too much plastic? The sr5 looks a little more upscale plus u save money to put into upgrades. Going to get new te hood, icon lift, tires and budbuilt sliders. Seems like that isnthe way to go.

YES. See that pic where my truck was loaded up to go camping? Winding road into the camp was still fun, because the truck wasn't rolling over left and right, even with the center of gravity way higher than normal.
KDSS is more for on-road benefit IMO.
I really like the SR5 a great deal, but now that I have a TE I am even happier. I have to say that the ON ROAD handling differences alone between my SR5 and TE justify (in my mind) the TE. My SR5 was kind of floaty and the nose diving under moderate to heavy breaking was a real annoyance. The TE is much tighter and solid feeling without being brutal. Add in the significantly reduced body roll and it is a big difference.
I also like the TE interior, and the seats seem firmer (again, in a good way). You can't go wrong with an SR5, but if you have any doubt then you should drive both and think both on and off road.

Let's just say that if God owned a 4Runner, it would be a Trail Edition (with KDSS).

Just so you know, I was in the same exact position you were in January. I traded my 2wd SR5 2011 in for a 2012 TE and paid $9500 out the door. I think the sale price was $38,100 after taxes but I got $29,000 in trade for my SR5. My TE only has Entune and no KDSS.
While I don't know what KDSS feels like, I do know that I have complete confidence in my TE to maneuver corners and to never EVER get stuck in ANYTHING.

Wow. Just test drove te. What a difference from sr5. I am a believer now. Suspension much better. Hood scoop gives it a great appearance. Extra bit of money worth it big time. Just hard to find at a good price. Dealerships know they have something special. Not wanting to deal as much. Definetely not going for invoice. All this said, resale going to b better with TE. If u can get your hands on one it will b worth it. Thing will last a very long time and resale will be great. Getting mine next week in black with kdss and entune. 38000 with tint included. Good price. Rear lockers also a bonus! Cant wait!
