Upgrading Speakers in 2012 SR5 Non-JBL Non-Nav

Hey all, need some advice on what type and size of speakers to upgrade to in my '12 SR5. I have base HU and stock speakers. With party mode on, I have to get to 80% max volume to be at a level of "sound" I'm content with.

However, I used to have Polk Components and selfpowered 8in Bazooka in my S10 Truck and ran in my 2006 Tacoma a 12" JL Sub, Alpine deck, and Alpine speakers.

So having stock speakers in my new 2012 SR5 is something that needs to be changed asap but on a economic friendly budget .

I actually do like the stock HU because I don't really care to have NAV or touchscreen DVD. I'm happy with loading all my music on my flashdrive and organizing them in folders and having the drive plugged into the USB port in the glovebox and controlling from stock HU.

I'm really just wanting to upgrade the existing speakers in the dash, front doors, rear doors and tailgate.

Anybody have suggestions for type and size of speakers? and where to place them? Would I need an amp for said new speakers? and can I connect that amp to stock HU?

Or if you have another idea on how to get better sound without changing stock HU or adding an amp, ie. putting certain types of speakers in certain areas of T4R (like I seen in another thread of putting Infinity Kappa 3.5's in the dash) let me know.

If you are planning on staying with the stock head unit you are going to be limited as far as what kinds of speakers you should put in. You need to get speakers that have a lower RMS rating so that your factory head unit can run them without too much work.

Rear 1 6.5 -
Rear 2 6.5 -

I think that is what you have in your 4runner. I would recommend alpine type S or maybe even type E speakers all the way around, if you want to go the Polk route I suppose the the DB series would suffice, um the Pioneer I would go with the G series speakers. If you really want to improve your sound I would recommend adding at least a decent 4 channel amp and then bump up the speakers to the next level up. If you went with alpine then I would step it up to the Type R, Polk I honestly wouldn't bother with their higher end speakers, and Pioneer maybe the A or D series. JL audio also makes nice higher end speakers but they are a little more expensive. My personal choice with a mid priced setup would do alpine type R all the way around with a PDX F6 4 channel amp running everything. That is what I am most likely do in my 4Runner.

Is this a good deal and quality?

Hey folks, okay, I'm not an audiophile. So today I went to a little mom and pop car audio/security systems shop. I've been in these types of shops and worked in computer section of Circuit City, so I know the name of the game. However, I'm not very knowledgeable of car audio. I basically told the salesguy I want to keep the HU and change all the speakers. He then showed me a pair of Kenwood components for the front end. I looked and said to show me something else and provide me sound samples.

We went to the demo area and he ran through all the speakers (no amp) just the HU powering the speakers. He tried to push the Alpine Type R's and S's, but everyone in my area seems to have R's and S's so I wanted to be different. He then demo'd the 6.5" Boston Acoustics coax and components (no amp) THEN amp'd. Gotta say, I really like the sound and imaging, but I didn't try to let that show on my face.

Afterwards, the all time question is asked by the sale man..."What kind of budget are you working with?" lol, I knew at somepoint that question was going to come out. He started with..."well if you can come in with $1800...I gave a look. Then he said okay hmmm...how about $978?". I said, "let me look around more, I just started looking today, so I'm not in a real rush". He took out his calculator and said..."$900 even work for you?" I asked kinda hesistantly asked, what would 900 do for my system?

The guy will install Boston 6.5 components in the front (tweeters in dash) CoAx in the doors. 6.5" Boston CoAx's rear doors and tailgate. Install a 400W 4 Channel Amp and put in Hi Lo Converters to eliminate the "engine noise" (dont know what that is).

So my question to you audiophiles or audio enthusiasts, I know Boston's are pretty good. So with what I described, is $900 a fair price? Let me remind you I'm in Hawaii. So I've already researched buying online and shipping then having to find someone to install it. I'd rather stick with paying someone who does it for a living.
