Urban Runner Stereo Replacement

Hi everyone,

I have a technical question relating to the Urban Runner.

I am replacing the horrible Eclipse/TomTom unit with a Kenwood DNX-8120. I knew that I should expect wiring to be different since Toyota basically slapped in an aftermarket deck at the factory.

Here is my hold up:

There is a removable harness that interfaces with the Eclipse unit and the factory harness. The problem is that the factory harness plugs look like no other Toyota standard harness.

Is there a harness available, or will I have to cut this removable harness? It appears to be color-coded to the standard for aftermarket decks.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I know I'm not the only one to ditch this deck!

Thanks.

When you get it installed please post how the bluetooth works for you. I have an IPhone 3g and the phonebook doesn't transfer and I can't dial out from the HU. I have not been able to get a solution from kenwood. It worked with the original bluetooth firmware but when i upgraded to 1.61 the problems started. I can't get them to give me the old firmware.

I installed a kenwood 7120 and the only solution I found was to cut the harness. Worked out fine.

I was thinking that was going to be it.

Next question: Where did you put the GPS antenna?

As for the bluetooth, I have the 8120 in my 08 Tundra. Also, with an iPhone 3g, but it's been solid. Phonebook transfers, recent call logs, everything but messages.

Not sure which BT firmware I have on there, but I can check.

I put the ant. behind the HU under the dash. It came with a piece of metal with an adhesive back. I stuck that on a piece of plastic to the upper right of the little cubby hole (vent duct?)directly behind the HU. It seems to work fine, gets a clean lock on the sats in a very short time even in my garage. If you could get those firmware numbers that would be great. My HU firmware is 2.5, BT 1.61, IPhone 2.1. I've tried everything I can think of but cannot get the phonebook to transfer or dialing from the HU to work(grayed out).

good info! thanks!

My HU is on 2.2.9
BT Version is 1.43
and Iphone is 2.2 I think. Whatever the latest version is.

Seems like i should look into upgrading atleast the HU firmware...

Thanks for the firmware info. Becareful of the BT firmware update, I think that is what caused my problems. I wish Kenwood would give me the old firmware so I could flash it back to 1.43. Are you replacing the speakers? I replaced mine with infinity comps in the front and coax in the rear. I was really dissapointed with the sound until i put dynamat on the outside and inside of the doors. Made a huge difference and quieted the ride too.

I dunno about replacing the speakers in the 4runner. Not yet anyway.

I really wanna hear it before I make that call. The new headunit alone will make a huge difference, but I have been looking at some aftermarket speakers. Dynamat is a great way to get more from the sound too. We'll see. I just blew the bank on a supercharger for my tundra, so i gotta save up a little...!

Hi Fish eye,

If you want good sound, you must replace the speakers, I replaced the 4 speaker with Kenwood 6x9" front, 6 1/2" Rear, I cut the original speaker and I used the plastic Base, in the doors I put Dynamat, the sound quality is really diferent.

Please you can post some pictures of dnx8120 installed!! I have a t4r 2008 limited, with a Scion tb equipment and I like changed for a kenwood 8120.

Other question, the plastic dash part, where the tomtom is mounted have some ID part?? , I am looking for this OEM parts, but the dealer tell me that he need the part number,

Thank,

good to know. Like I said, speakers are likely gonna be the next mod.

As for that trim ring on the urban runner, I can get you the P/N, if there is one, but I doesn't fit with the 8120. It may fit with other stereos though, but I doubt it. Seems like it was designed around the Eclipse/tomtom deck.

I actually tried to see if it would fit before ordering the other one from Crutchfield.

One more question for you guys, particularly SDayRiver:

Did you install a PAC SWI-JACK? If so, which wires are for the steering wheel controls?

I am half tempted to disassemble everything myself, and take it to a stereo shop. That way the wiring isn't an issue, and I don't have to worry about them mucking up the dash pieces...

I did not install the swi-jack but wish i had. I thought I wouldn't miss the steering whell controls but i do. I will add that in the future. I believe the steering wheels controls were the small square plug that went into the back of the tomtom. If you intall the swi-jack please post how that works out.
