My new H/U doesn't have an auxillery out port on the front, and while I have an Ipod, I also have an android phone with a lot of music, podcasts, etc on it. And I liked having the Aux port in the center console. It's cleaner that way than having a wire dangling around.
So what to do?
Well, actually it's a pretty easy mod.
You need the following:
Ohmmeter
Solder and iron
Insulating tape or heat shrink tubing
a RCA to Stereo phono cable.
A stereo phono cable
Your stock Aux port and the connector on the back.
Step 1. Remove the trim plate (you just pull up, disconnect the cig lighter and the DAC)
Step 2. Disconnect the grey connector from the back and push out the Aux plug. You just snake your hand underneath and compress the clips, it pops out pretty easily.
Step 3. Cut off that connector, tape off the end to prevent a short.
Step 4. Strip the wires, you'll have 4. Red, green, black, and blue. Pins 1-4 respectively. Pins 1 and 3 are 1 channel, and pins 2 and 4 are the other.
Step 5. Cut the end off of the phono cable, strip and expose the 4 wires. In my case they were red, black, black, blue. Yours may differ.
Step 6. Using an ohmmeter, figure out which cables at the phono end are connected to the RCA cables, and label their positions.
Step 7. Solder. I twisted the wires to create a mechanical connection, and then used the solder to flow through the wire. Mine were different guages, else I might have used a splice.
Step 8. Insulate the wires seperately, either using electrical tape or heat shrink tubing. I used tape.
Step 9. Check the continuity of your cable from the RCA connectors to the pins on the grey connector. Once that's done and good , heat shrink tube the 4 cables together, this gives it some rigidity.
Step 10. Install the Aux port, and then run the cable underneath the trim plate to the back of your stereo, connecting it to one of the Aux IN ports. (Don't forget to go into your stereo settings and turn it on!)
Then reinstall the dash.
You're done! It sounds pretty good too. It's an easy mod, and even if you do have an Aux port on the front of your H/U. It keeps everything much cleaner.
