Yes, its possible and several here have done it, including me. It's not that hard to do so I think your installer is just being lazy. The camera signal is common video and all you need to do is tap into the lines and possibly hook the reverse signal to your new head unit (see the link in the mod write-up sticky for the wiring diagram). If running the wires from the rear view mirror, you'll probably scrape your knuckles routing them, if your old head unit was a nav type that displayed the camera I believe they are right where you need them already. My camera now displays in both the mirror and on my Alpine head unit, auto-magically when I shift into reverse. There is also a write up on how to install a switch to manually turn on the camera in case you want to see when driving forward (maybe to check a trailer).
Thanks Grant, I'll have to quiz him on where he got his info. The next question is does anyone know if the hands free controls on the steering wheel can work with after market head units? This has not worked either and I am pretty disappointed about these two things. Everything else rocks on this unit I must say.

I have the 2012 wiring which might be different. Here's a link to the 2010 wiring. If I remember it's in the parking assist section.
