V6 4Runner Sport V6 gas milage

Hey Gang.
Just wondering wat you other v6 owners are getting. Specifically if you are above "sea level". I'm in Denver and was wondering what others were getting. the reason I ask is:

I have 18,XXX on my runner and was getting 21-23 miles to the gallon when it was new, I bought it last january and averaged 22.3MPG. Now i'm getting around 15-16 miles to the gallon.

I thought it was the air filter, since it was a year old, I replaced it with an OEM and went from ~17.5 to ~15.5. One tank difference same gas station.

So then I checked the tire pressure, I have 35PSI in all of them, even though the check tire light is still on...

oil level is perfect, only have run mobel 1.

My buddy here in Denver has a V8 and he is getting ~19.

I went to the toyota dealership and they asked if the check engine light was on and I said no, "well there is nothing wrong with it..." "Should have bought a V8" Arrrrrrggghhhhh.

Somebody make sence of this for me.

Well, I know this isn't what you're looking for but 15 or 16 mpg is what I'm getting on my 3.4.

I don't know what year your's is but it sounds about normal.

I have posted about mileage numerous times. Plenty of others have posted also. For the record my '06 SR5 now has about 46000 miles on it. I have generally gotten in the high 16's and low 17's around town and about 19.8 pn the road. I have only broken 20 on three tanks. the first two were in the first thousand miles and I broke it again about a week ago on a road trip back to Atlanta from Alabama. I generally hear V8's are a bit less but I hear that 4WD models (mine isn't - wish it was) get about the same as 2WD models since they are mostly operated in 2WD mode most of the time and the weight difference is negligable.

Thanks for the follow up again. I did a search and found plenty of people at "sea level", your posts for example; but I was looking more for people living at +5500 above sea level. It playes out slightly different up here.

It's an 07' weinerdogbone. I've herd that there is not alot of difference in milage between the 4.0 and the 3.4. So its "good" to hear that your getting those numbers. sounds like I should have gotten the V8, doesn't seem to be difference.

My '07 V6, 4x4, is getting 16-17 in city, and 22 out on the high ways. Live at 1500, and drive above that most often. Still getting used to elevation above my home along the coast. oh, I'm 50+ years.

yeah i am at sea level... in a v6 2006 2wd and i am getting 20.3

Well, MPG's depend HEAVILY on how you drive and where you drive. You can't compare numbers between a guy who drives mostly on the highway vs. someone who commutes 5 miles to work. In the city, your MPG's seem about right. If I'm gassing it like crazy, I've even seen 13MPG. On the highway, I average 21-22MPG (mine's a 2002). But that's setting the cruise at 70MPH. If I'm at 80 or constantly accel/decel, then the numbers start dipping quite a bit. My friend's 05 also got the same MPG in the city and highway.

So, perhaps the first thing that should be looked at is what your driving habits are and where you drive.

This maybe a long-shot but did you get the mass-air sensor dirty? A mis-clipped air filter for some window of time? V6's also don't use platinum plugs :wtf:. Life expectancy is supposed to be 30k but maybe due to gas formulations etc they are wearing out???? If you want a fresh start on the ECM learning disconnect the battery overnight. Remember you will have 'normalize' the windows and reset the radio etc.

Just for reference, I live at 8000 ft here in Colorado. Have an '07 V6 with 17,500 miles. Since new (in 11/07), I've averaged around 18 mpg in winter and 19 in summer -- driving about 60% highway, 40% city.

Note that this is the true, manually calculated mileage; the computer is consistently off by +1 to +2 mpg. I've only seen 20-21 mpg on very long hauls with no mountain passes.and cruise set at 65-70.

Check your spare tire pressure. It also has a sensor in the valve stem and will cause the warning light.

As far as mileage goes. I am at a whooping 435ft MSL here in Raleigh, NC. My new SE 4x4 V-6 is only getting about 15-17MPG so far, but I would not say it is even properly broken in yet since it has just over 1000 miles right now.

In comparision my 04 is getting 17-19 MPG but it is 2WD Synthetic fluids, 80k of break in with the same driving. Hopefully that will improve slightly since I will be going back to a 265/65 all season tire soon, changing to 5w-20 oil, and recently cleaned the Mass Airflow Sensor.

My tires have almost 50k on them also and they are cupped and growl, so I suspect they are hurting my mileage also besides the fact they are a size bigger.

thanks all for all your usefull info. Looks like i'm just going to have to swallow the fact and if it continues to drop, well then I'll take it into the dealer.

I never thought about looking at the MAF. good idea. Plugs, thats scarry, if thats the case.

I logged my tank to tank consumption for 2 years and averaged 18mpg, with a best of 23 and a worst of 15.5 (towing). I think this is fine for the size of vehicle, capability and my heavy foot.
I have noticed a deterioration in consumption now that its nearing 65,000miles and also since fitting more aggresive Bridgestone Revo tyres.
There is also a noticable difference between using regular and premium gas, the extra miles I get out of a tank of premium makes up for the additional cost, and it runs smoother with a bit more grunt through the revs.

towing... I towed a trailer full of woodworking tools up the mountain, and saw no difference in millage. i got 15.7mpg.
