Have a '06 SR5 ..how can I determine the build date?
VIN: JTEBU14R668069745

Built in February of 2006. Just Google vin decoder and plug the number in. It also lists the build date on the sticker in your driver's door jamb. Looks like this (build date is circled):

So just read through this entire thread..... How come this issue is more apparent in 04-05 4runners and not the 2003?
Mine is a 2003
Production date 11/02
Mileage 150xxx no issues **knock on wood**
Just did a coolant change 3k ago and never had an issue with a rough startup
Shit. Did you buy it from a dealer or a private party? If you're already hearing the noise just at day 2, I'd be willing to bet a LOT of money the seller topped off the coolant to hide the leak rather than pay to fix it themselves.I thought I did my research and found a great car now I feel sick to my stomach
Just bought an 05 v6. Test drove it and did not hear the waterfall noise. Day 2 of owning it and I hear it. No smoking at start up and it runs like a top.

Sorry to hear it.
Fellow HoRunners,
My 2005 Sport 2WD V6 has 285,000 miles. Getting all the usual clues indicating the driver side head gasket issue: 30 second rough start, VSC combo of lights. It was consuming coolant but I replaced radiator 6 months ago and no more detectable coolant loss.
I just can't see paying $2000+ for a real deal head job. The vehicle is not worth more than $5000. I'm thinking of going the cheap route and just replace the head gasket and keep going, bare minimum action.
Do you have to pull the engine to pull the heads and replace the gaskets? Any other major issues foreseen in not going all in on professional head job?
Thanks so much!
I would just use K-seal for a truck with that mileage.
I wonder if it might be beneficial at all to use Kseal or some similar product as preventative maintenance?
