V6 Timing Belt

I'm the 3rd owner of a 95 with the V6. There is a bearing noise coming from the front of the engine. My tech sez I should replace the timing belt. I have no record of it ever being done and I'm not against it just for the sake of peace of mind. The Owner's Manual doesn't make any mention of it in the maintenance schedule. What gives? Should I have the water pump replaced at the same time as long as he's that far into it?

The bearing noise could be the water pump or else one of the pulleys. If you have the belt changed, change all of that too in order to make sure you're fixing the problem. The extra parts are nothing compared to the labor cost for the job.

I believe all the V6's have timing chains.

For 4th gen's 4.0 V6, 1GR, are timing chains.

2nd gen's 3.0 V6 and 3rd gen's 3.4 V6, 3VZ and 5VZ, respectively, are timing belts.

Belts and Chains

30 years ago I'd be turning wrenches myself. I'm just glad I know what I'm paying for and happy to write the check. Yeah, if I pay someone to go in, they're going to replace all of the wear items. I got lucky finding this one. I wasn't looking for a 4Runner but I'm really liking it and I'm glad I found it.

yes replace what you can at this stage. Timing belt, water pump, cam and crank seals, drive belts, any loose/wobbly idler pulleys, rad hoses, thermostat, etc. If some of the hidden stuff fail, you have to undo all of it to change them.
