V8 exhaust manifold

I have a 2005 V8 4runner

When I start the engine from cold there is a ticking sound that comes from tne engine when I press the gas. This sound goes away after about 5-10 minutes of driving. It's been suggested that it might be a cracked exhaust manifold.

I'm I doing any harm to the engine if I don't get this fixed? The sound is annoying at first but it goes away. I don't want to spend the money right now if it's not doing any harm to the engine.

The V8 is a great engine.....but it is A VERY noisy motor! Don't worry about it!

I do have a cracked right side manifold, wont pass inspection in MA, dealer quote is 1,500 to replace including parts.

Took my 03-v8 to dealer today . Said I need both manifolds replaced . Cost around $3000.00 . First they said it was under warrenty then came back and said no . I;m soooo pissed . I have never had this problem with other vehicles . Yes it is 8years old but only 66,000 miles . Maybe its time to go back to old brand I never had these problems . And to top that off my mech. says my rack is going . Sorry need to vent .:redbrick::redbrick::redbrick:

If they want 3k to replace exhaust manifolds...... they're trying to rip you off.
Even at warranty time (about 10 hours) and 100 something an hour shop rate, it should be under 2k.
Unless you have the one with the cats integrated, then they get exspensive. But the ones with the cats in them usually don't leak either.

Shop around... you'll likely find someone to do it for MUCH less.

But if you think you're better off with another brand.... I'd wish you the best of luck, and when you come back to Toyota, I'd say "I told you so".

Yea I'll have to check around . They said the manafolds were $750 a piece and heat shields were $70 a piece , plus gaskets ect., ect. . And they quoted 11.5 hrs labor .

I have the right side wheel off, the truck on stands and penetrating oil already working....

I started hearing the ticking last year and it progressively got worse. Finally failed inspection and that is why I now have to do it. The dealer wanted 2k just for the right side manifold repair......i'll have raw bloody knuckles from working in that tight space before ever give into that!!

I'll keep you posted as to what I REALLY found because I'm guessing they only guessed themselves when they said it was the manifold. I'm still hoping for just a leaky gasket.

BTW, my 05 V8 only has 76k miles on it!!

The manifolds are usually cracked where they are bent to form the flange.
I've yet to see one that is just the gasket. Now I have seen someone tighten one of the nuts with the flange not seated correctly, and bend the new manifold.

Your best friends are a 14mm semi-deep u-joint socket, or a ujoint with a 14mm socket, and a long extension, and good ratchet.

You can sneak all the nuts out that way. You HAVE to be really carefull, and make wure the socket stays straight on the nut, though.

I had/have crack in my 2003 V8 manifold. It comes as one piece with the cat. Last year I was also quoted over 1000$. I think it was more like 1500/1600$

I had lots of work done on my cars at a garage/muffler place around the corner. Got to be friendly with the owner as he wanted to start doing some offroading too but didn't know where the trails were....bingo........I did..... so we chatted a little more....

And....he offered to do the repair old school. He pulled it off, and welded shut the crack. Apparently that's how they did it in the old days and none of the young guns know to to do that, or want to do that yadayadayada...Anyway...

He also noticed that it had already been done before. My truck was second hand. So who knows.....

Anyways, it lasted about year. I hear it again now. But only when it starts up, and Ihear nothing on the inside while driving. But he did tell me it would get me by for about a year. Maybe this could be an alternative to hold off paying the 1500$ right away. This worked for me. No inspections to pass where I live. So can't say if it would pass or not. But noise is minimal.

Ok good. Check engine did not light up for me for that. But I did have a bad seal where the end of the piping and cat meet the second exhaust pipe that takes the exhaust to the back to the muffler is bolted. That seal was leaking exhaust, and taking in air, and the sensor that is there was not getting the proper reading so it gave me a check engine. Cost me only just a few dollars for that seal and new bolts. While at it, I had all those seals and bolts changed. Check engine light was then gone.

Toyota wanted to change the manifod, and the sensor and change exhaust pipe because of my CEL.

When the Check Engine throws a code....it is not always saying, "hey i'm a bad sensor, change me, and everything will be better" Sometimes it is just saying " hey I'm a sensor, and I'm not sensing what I should be sensing, adjustment needed" in other words, the sensor is doing what it is suppossed to be doing.

A sensor is seeing something out of it's parameter limits, or an ecu is seeing sensor out of IT'S parameter limits.

Anyone know the torque value for the 8 manifold nuts? I need a device manual, but am still looking for a cheap download.

2005 v8 says 33 ft-lbs.

We were talking about this on one of my posts, I am currently looking for my 1st 4runner and the used car guy tried telling me this was a problem cause the V8 was designed for the Tundra which has a bigger engine bay, in the 4Runner he said the engine bay was too small and they ruined the manifold...didn’t sound right to me so I brought it here.

Was informed that it is a known problem and MIGHT be covered under warrantee...

CRAZY how much those 8 bolts are kicking my butt!! I got 3 of the upper nuts off with the 4th so stripped that I'll have to cut it off and am dreading getting under the truck to TRY to get to the other 4......I'm not not quitting just yet.

i did invest in a set of sockets from Sears that are supposed to be good for rusted/stripped nuts/bolts, we'll see how they do.

I couldn't see where it was leaking; but the manifold better be split wide open after all this hassle.

Yeah my 2005 V8 has a cracked passenger side one, I can clearly hear it for the first 5 minutes or so in the morning at low RPMS under load and it speeds up with RPMs. tick.......tick......tick.....tick...tick.tick.tick.tick

I'm going to live with it for now, no emissions to deal with here.

Its so lame 07+ V8 4Runners have the option to atleast go with Thorley headers but not us. OEM is the only replacement.

I'm more likely to do a catback though and mask the sound instead of replacing the manifold. Maybe in spring if its still annoying me I'll take a crack at the manifold.

I have 08 4runner V8 ONLY 14,000 miles and I hear this ticking noise, Im guessing this maybe the same noise veryone hearing. I bought mine used, No warrenty. will this be cover by Toyota or will I have to pay thanks. I'm guessing I will be paying for IT. I just bougth this 4runner last week.

Well it took me quite some time to finish this little project with vacations, work and shear laziness standing in my way but it's finally all back together.

I was really hoping for the "leaky" gasket but in the end it actually was cracked right where I expected based on pics posted by others. It does look like it can be welded but I chose to just end this fun and get a new one.
