V8 Full-Time 4WD, what do you do when you blow a CV offroad?

Hey all,


I've had this silly question on my mind. What the heck do you do when you blow out a CV joint on the trail and don't have a replacement?

You can't drive home because you can't take it out of 4WD... What about towing it out the road to get it on a trailer or flat deck? Do you just let it roll and risk more carnage or contamination?

You engage CDL and go slow back to the main road. CDL will split the torque 50/50 so at least the rear axle will help push some, but it has it's limits so go slow and easy.

Question is, what happens to the center differential when this is done? Will it grenade? Can anyone shed any light on this?

This is an idea. I wonder what risks are involved here... Would suck to damage the rig any more.
 
Disconnecting the front driveshaft shouldn't grenade the center differential, that T3 Torsen is pretty robust.

As for having the CDL engaged, it's probably the only way you'll get the vehicle to move under it's own power. As long as you take it easy and try not to take too sharp of turns, you should be fine though using it as a "Limp Home" mode. I wouldn't use it on the freeway, but enough to get you back on the road for a flatbed should be fine.

Having done this twice now I can say that BW is spot on though slow and easy may not be necessary depending on how badly the CV was blown. Once my shaft was exploded and dangling, the other time it remained somewhat intact but nonfunctional. That time I engaged the CDL and could carefully drive at normal speeds.

The time it was totally blown and no longer connected to the wheel I strapped what remained of the axle to the shock making sure it was not touching anything it would damage as it spun while I drove with the CDL engaged. Turning was sketchy but I made it home while appreciating that most of my 70 mile drive home was on a straight road.

Both times I was able to drive the speed limit as long as I was going straight.

we like to wheel the piss out of our runners. ive blown cvs on the trail twice aswell. one time required me to limp my self out of a 5 out of 5 rated trail and then drive almost 30 miles going less than 30mph all the way home. when you blow a cv or two (it happens ok) the front diff just spins to the broken side or sides, so it acts like its in two wheel drive. if you try and move withe the cdl unlocked in that situation you will go nowhere. i now carry at least one spare shaft and at least 2qts of fluid with me when i wheel so i can get to a flat spot and take the 20 minutes to change the shaft out.

ive had good luck with napa reman axles. just check to make sure they are remaned oem axles with the OE joints. otherwise go with a new OEM or a CVJ axle. most other remans with get torn to shreds or explode in my experience.

Toyota or CVJ if you want robust units. So far the aftermarket stuff is good for daily driving, but we've seen members mentioning that they've had issues on the trails with them. You may want to do a search and look at some threads to get an idea of the failures with various OEM axles.
 
No, I have not used the search button, just stumbled upon this thread...

Are folks not carrying a spare and changing on the trail? I've changed out several CV's and got really good with my old Pathy. I always had a spare with me for the past 5 years and always carried the tools needed to change. I've also seen it done multiple times on trail with a 3rd Gen T4R and it seemed similar to the Pathy. So I'm honestly just curious if there was a consensus about doing this (or not) trail-side with the 4th Gen V8.
 
ok. I'm not new to rockcrawling,but I am to the new 4runners. what is the CDL? I have a 2003 v8 so I may need to know this. lol.

Just saw this and I'd guess most people do though I haven't. I have a spare but really didn't expect to blow one even though I have twice now. :rolleyes:

I hate trail repairs. I'm an "old guy" and my body's kind of shot so trail repairs beat me up pretty badly, I prefer to limp home where I can take my time to fix stuff.
 
What do you mean by blow a CV, like the boot or like grenade the whole shaft? I usually carry a spare, but if its just the boot, you should be able to at least make it home fine.

kinda like this, i sheered the splines clean off. dont ask me how i did it but it did piss me off enough to start carrying a spare.

oh damn thats rough! ive never done that in 9 years of wheeling my FJ and my GX, but I would definintely carry a spare after that
