Wow, Rando, you're getting 12.5 mpg?! I had the sulfur tsb done as well and didn't really see a drop in fuel consumption afterwards. Have you asked the toyota techs about this?

I have an 04' Limited V8 4wd, and my dad has a 05' Sport V6 4WD... Sorry to say, the V6, my dad gets on average 3mpg better than I do. I drive his runner sometimes, it it's consistent. The computer for some reason is always reading about 2mpg better than what you're actually getting.

Yep, it looks like I'm all alone at the bottom of the list -- the proud owner of the 4thGen V8 with the worst gas mileage! And yes, I believe there was a very distinct drop off in mileage and performance related to the sulfer tsb fix. I'm due for my 1yr service so I'll bring it up to them but I fully expect them to tell me that everything is functioning fine.

I seriously considered upgrading to an 05 just to get my MPG back to where it should be, restore my performance and of course get the extra ponies of the VVT-i. I'm usually a fairly good negotiater when it comes to car deals but even I couldn't make a trade-in deal (after only 1yr) work out in my favor. The couple hundred dollars/yr extra i'm paying in fuel won't offset the first year depreciation nor sales tax.

I have noticed a decrease in MPG since the Sulphur TSB, I had mentioned to a service dept. guy and he said he hadnt heard anything about the sulphur tsb effecting the mpg and then when i told him i saw a definite decrease he asked if my check engine light was on, i said NO and he said well then there is nothing wrong...so basically i got the basic runaround....maybe you can get a different answer....good luck

Went to the dealership today, I do not have a problem it is just the oxgenated gas we have here in Maryland. The mileage will rebound in May when we have normal gas again. The service tech could not smell the musty ordor from "air handeling system". He suggested that I not use recirculate button. I only used the recirc button when it snowed so snow did not blow in from the vents using the defroster on high. I got a headach, the sun is shinnig ,its warm enough to wash the T4R and beer lots of beer at least the dam thing will look good.

7.. Your average MPG (Computer of Calculated) 16.6 calculated (US gallons - converting L/100km into mpg by dividing 235.21 by the L/100km value) - computer is consistently 15% optimistic on this.

Best ever on a tank was 18.9, worst was 13.2. Biggest factors seem to be:

a - driving style - heavy right foot = poor mileage
b - outside temperatute - cold = longer warm up = poor mileage
c - tire pressure - lower = poor mileage
d - length of journey - short journeys are bad due again to warm up time.

I put a block heater in to try to tackle (b) but not convinced yet that it has had a big effect.

btw - I would love to know what the 2 people who had over 24mpg were doing to get that kind of figure!!!

When my 4R was stock I used to get above 20MPG easily on my daily commute, sometimes up to 22-23. I only use 91 (highest here) and I do a lot of highway driving and not neccasarily at low speeds either. BUT I NEVER SAW 24 OR ABOVE. I suppose it is possible in a 2WD doing 60 or less on highway driving, mine is 4wd.

Maybe they just use the indicator instead of calculating as well.

But it seems the average is well below 20 mpg.

the only way I would get over 24mpg would be either

a) using imperial gallons not US gallons in my calculation
b) putting the 4Runner on a flatbed

2004 V8 AWD, SR5

Northern Cal.

10,700 miles,

City/Hwy mixed routes.

Mild and fairly conservative driving.

87 octane.

Computer says 19-22, but mainly 19-20 mpg; actual is 17-19. I have gotten 22 mpg (24 on the 'puter) while traveling at about 60-65 mph for about 50 miles in medium freeway traffic. IT was moving nicely without the usual stop and go so it just cruised at about 1,600 rpm, purring right on down.
