You can't tell by looking at the belt whether it is still good. It could look perfect and break tomorrow.

The point is I went past what you're trying to fear monger and was 100% fine. It could have gone another 100k. Quit acting like the service recommendations are the bible. Toyota makes money on fools like you daily.

My local Toy dealers occasionally send out coupons such as: Special oil change, summer or winter special, $25 off $75 or 10% 15% off parts or service but it's rare to see 20% off service. So check with your local Toy dealer or their websites for promotion.
Ever seen a Toyota motor destroyed when a timing belt broke? I have.

My problem is I bought my truck knowing the odometer had gone out at some point. When looking through records on Toyota's website + the miles I put on the truck I should around 180K. One of the last records at Toyota for the truck was in November 2012 and says the customer denied timing belt replacement. I have no idea if they had it done at another shop or not before I got it. The truck changed hands 2 more times in less than a year before I ended up with it. The truck has a shady history which is why I got a great deal on it. I've done my work and brought it back to life but I REALLY don't want to pay someone to replace it if it was potentially done in late 2012 or early 2013. No stickers or anything on the timing cover and hood is aftermarket so no service stickers were on it when I got the vehicle. I don't know if one of the sellers removed them to hide the fact that the odometer had gone out when selling to one of the other owners but it's nowhere to be found. Anyone have any ideas on how to check?

Visual inspection is not the end all be all but it has to hold some merit. Don't you think that if there were visible cracks and the rubber was dry to the touch a belt would be in worse shape than the one from my truck that was still pliable and didn't have any cracks?
Yes, it's a service recommendation but it is overly conservative. Blackworksinc is a Toyota tech and he says 120k is the farthest he would recommend going on the service interval.

Firestone wanted $1430, lol. Went to another local mechanic, wanted $1340 but that included diff oil change.
First Toyota dealer I called wanted $1175. Called a second Toyota dealer, they quoted $479 for the timing belt install + $179 for the water pump...you know where I'm going.

I'm a hobby mechanic. I have replaced my belt by myself using this forum and videos on YouTube. Took me about 20 hours total and one case of beer 
Here in canada they quoted me 1800$ just for a labor. finally I paid 240$ for timing belt kit from amazon and did that by myself. It's not a easy job but it worth it especially if you have a tools,time and no money in the pocket
BTW - My 04 with 135 000 kilometers has already cracks on the timing belt but I live in canada - low temps are killing rubber elements really fast.

The water pump is not "Recommended" by Toyota to replace at a certain interval but it's pretty stupid to do a T/belt without doing replacing one. Same with the seals is my point.

I paid $900 for timing belt, water pump, serpentine belt, thermostat and coolant. All oem parts. At the dealer.
Oddly enough the serpentine belt was way more expensive than the timing belt... as far as parts go...
I told them while they were in there to replace anything and everything that looked questionable...
Price difference was not big enough to justify aftermarket parts and local mechanic.

...So those knuckleheads at Toyota that (don't recommend W/P and seals) and many of us here did not follow your "advice" are all stupid ????? If so, please count me in as another stupidoo....

hes saying its not "recommended" by Toyota, even though you know damn well the service writer will tack it on if he can. Hes saying you're in there, you might as well. Not saying anyone is stupid to do so, it would be stupid NOT to.
It takes a fair bit of labor to take apart enough of the ancillaries in order to get to the timing belt. Once you've done that, you've also exposed what you need to replace the water pump. The water pump is relatively cheap and it does wear out, so while you are there it make sense to replace it.
Yep, the price is included W/P and tensioner. As for the seal if it's not leak, they will leave it alone.

Got the work done yesterday and had a chat with the mechanic who is a good friend and a fellow yota guy (FJ). He told me on our timing belts, it's hard to tell visually if its still good or not. He's done lots of these timing belt jobs on the 4.7 V8 and the ones that have snapped still looked like they were good and are hard to tell even when compared to a brand new timing belt.
I got replacements for: timing belt/pulleys/tensioner, water pump, water outlet gasket, thermostat, thermostat gasket, o ring seal, new radiator cap since mine was broken, and coolant flush
Total was $396.30 for the parts, and $372 for the labor, all in all with tax was $800 flat, great deal considering the job takes 5-6 hours.
