V8 very bad mpg

Alright fellas, need a little input here... My mpg is unreasonably bad as of recently. Let me tell you what I've got. 2005 4runner V8 4x4 LTD with 92k miles. FJ springs and 5,100's BFG A/T 285/70/17 and an ARB roof rack and K&N drop in, HCF delete. I'm getting less than 13mpg combined. Yes, manually calculated at 21 gallons pumped with 270ish miles out of a tank. THATS 12.8!!!
It seems that immediately after I dropped in the K&N and deleted the HCF, it all went bad. Are my tires really that heavy? Could overoiling the filter give me a problem? The HFC delete? Roof rack? Please give your opinion or advise, thanks so much. Sorry for the giant upside down photo, not sure how to fix this IMG_9360.jpg

Honestly 13 doesn't sound too bad, almost what I would have expected.

I was getting 13 with 33's, a full 3" lift, and armor.

It must have dropped when you put in the k&n, what were you getting before?

I was getting 19 before the mods... 15-17 before the filter swap

Don't forget to adjust distance for the larger tire circumstance.

As for the filter changes, you're now letting more air in the engine at the same throttle level and, therefore, using more fuel. So you need to recalibrate your foot to make up for this.

My old buddy had a 2003 V8, and the day he put the ARB roof rack on, he lost 2MPG. I'd suggest you take that thing off if you don't use it.

He was at 17.1 mpg daily before the rack, then a solid 15 mpg after it.

Or you could try adding a wind deflector to it.
 
I get 12.8-13.5 MPG. Sucks. Tires were the biggest killer for me. Then all the RCI skids, sliders bla bla bla. I used to get 18-21 when all stock.

As for the K&N, make sure you did not over oil it and get oil from the filter on your MAF, I have seen that many times and it will also hurt your MPG/make the car not run well.
 
I have an '03 V8 stock except for going up one tire size. The truck has never gotten over 14.5 to 15 mpg in my driving situation. I average around 14 mpg. Sounds fairly normal for all your mods. One thing, when I had a kayak/bike rack on my roof it noticeably affected the mpg, 1 to 2 mpg.
 
Roof rack is definitely at least partially responsible.. tire pressure.. also check calipers.. lazy or sticking calipers can be and have been a huge player. but even at that.. im between 13 and 15 avg.. on the highway cruising ive been up to 18 19 with current mods and hand calculated mileage.
 
I'm at 13.5 with a roof rack, steel bumper and 33's. I think it's good on gas compared to what I've had in the past. You'll get use to it.

Should I just reinstall my HCF? Can this be done? Superglue it back into place?

Yeah, I'm thinking to remove it. I bought the truck with it on, although I'd like to think I'll use it..... let's be realistic. Plus I like the look without it. Anyone wanna buy a ARB rack??? I know the guy I bought it from paid 900+ for it

I don't believe I overoiled, just one line on each rivet. Should I switch back to my stock filter? Or is it possible to reinstall the HCF?

Had my brakes checked, they're good, but I will be checking the tire pressure! And removing the roof rack

Removing the HCF seems to have gotten most better MPGs so I wouldn't put it back in, and if you bought it with the roof rack and was getting decent MPGs it isn't the issue, but removing it will help get the MPGs back up a bit, so that leaves only the K&N, tires, etc., ......oh and driving upside down is a real killer on MPGs :rofl:

I have avoided K&N filters because of the oil, even when oiled properly the risk of fouling the MAF is still there, if you haven't had the MAF cleaned recently it may help a bit to have that done, if for no other reason than it's part of regular maintenance.

40psi ish?
Oh, and this most recent tank took me 250 miles. Just sad. I got well over 300 previously. Let's just see if these changes help!

20 gallons and I get on average 240 miles each time. Don't know whats the fuss is about. I wish I can get 300 miles per fill up, but I am mostly doing local so i hardly reach 300+ unless I am going to Los Angeles from Las Vegas
