I have used one for 25+ years. It has saved my ass more times than I can count. Especially speed traps
Updates several times

The new one really sounds like an upgrade.

Maybe new apps will come out for it that have gone away with iPhone 11. But at least the V1 app allows you to select frequencies in your state and run it stealth

Though I don’t speed much in the 4R I do have a sports car that is a bad influence.

Likely not ($499 + shipping). I find when driving the 4runner, there is always a rabbit passing/leading the way. When I had the STI (and was younger) the Gen 1 was helpful though.
 
I'm tempted, but not sure I really need it. My last car was a 3 series and it was easy to drive fast in that. I find myself maxing out at like 70-75 in the 4runner and most of the time driving more reasonably.

I've had my V1 for at least 15 years and it's been amazing. I'm tempted to order the Gen 2 on that basis alone.

EDIT: After looking at it again, I'm probably not going to order it. I don't like the changes they made to the functionality of the unit at all. The volume knob setup on the original has been absolutely perfect; going to this stupid plastic button with the volume buttons on top is a huge step in the wrong direction. The interface on the old one with the 8 horizontal ramp-up lights was better than the 6 vertical. And while the lights that actually light up as "k", "ka", etc. are better than the simple dot on the old one, they simply should have differentiated them by color instead.

I really think those are some colossal errors in design and a step back from the old one, which is unbelievable given the time the old one was on the market and how long this one was in development. Big mistakes and not worth the $500 imo. It's very disappointing, and I'll likely look elsewhere.

Had the V1 and really liked it but not sure if I need a radar in my 4R. V2 looks pretty nice. I drive so slow compared to my previous vehicles so might save my money [emoji16]

Good to see them finally upping their game, it's long overdue IMO. I might circle back and take a closer look at the V1 Gen 2 when I'm done with my current round of mods. By then, I'll be able to see where the consensus has settled out. Until then, my money can find a better home.
 
Unfortunately V1G2 does not detect speed camera radar at the moment so it’s a no go for me. Here in NYC they are rolling out hundreds of fixed speed cameras until they have 750 cameras. I run a Uniden R7 at the moment.
 
I haven't used a detector in probably 25 years. And it seemed when I did have one I got stopped a LOT more frequently. I have a couple good friends in law enforcement and detectors recently came up in conversation. Consensus is they don't work for crap any more. I haven't had a ticket in probably 15 years and it was 5-6 years before that one since the one before. Both of those were by aircraft. No stopping that with a detector.

Your state is quite efficient on the aircraft method. 2 tickets in 10 years, both by aircraft in your state.
 
I have used the regular V1 about 15 years. Lately it has been driving me nuts on the highway with all the lane change/departure shit out there, especially GM and VAG.

I just ordered the new one. The old V1 can go live in the Jeep, which never sees highway time.

And the escort from the Jeep can go into the car we just got for the new driver of the family.

The Escort MAX360 that I use definitely works. I have another buddy that uses it and he can attest to that. This radar can detect highway patrol that is a mile or more away 360 degrees all around me and it will point in the direction where they are at or coming from. Keep in mind it only works when the patrol cruiser has the radar switched to ON. If it’s off, then of course it wont detect anything. Some patrolman know this so they only flick the on switch when they really need to.

For me it's not just a speed thing. Its knowing when they are around.

Just for instance. Countless times I have rolled up to an intersection with a stop sign and a cop monitoring it from a location that was less than obvious. My radar detector lets me know he is there and I will make damn sure I don't roll through that stop sign.

That's one example, but overall I would have a lot more tickets, maybe even some license losses, had I had no radar detector.

Again, my sports car days are gone for now anyway...I'm not burning up the road anywhere. But I have been ticket free for over 10 years and I can assure you that would not be the case if not for my V1.

Those are the ones you worry about. But if they are actively flicking the switch at times, you tend to pick up the signals bouncing that were aimed at cars ahead.

If the area is totally deserted and you get a trigger jockey like that, you are likely just screwed if you are speeding.

Exactly. And this is why my law enforcement friends say they are useless. Only the laziest of officers sit there with their radar on. I sometimes ride quite fast on my bike and I just keep my eyes VERY open. But that's a necessity riding a motorcycle anyhow these days.

I’m always aware of my surroundings when going over the speed limit and don’t rely on my radar completely. I just use common sense when I drive and I also don’t excessively speed at night. When I hear or see any blipping at all from my radar detector I definitely slow down and be on alert of whats around. It’s a tool used to drive safely and quickly and not be used for reckless driving.
 
I will tell you this, there have been numerous times the radar detected a cruiser way ahead of time where it gave me the time to slow down, where if I did not have it, I would have definitely been pulled over. YMMV

Let’s all face the truth, most people drive above the speed limit, especially on the Interstate where I use it the most. Its a controversial tool that some people think it does not work or think it should be banned. Also its a good idea to check your state laws if its even legal to use in your state.

I also have the gen1 in each of our cars. I ended up tuning it through the app and for a few years it was great with the blind spot systems. As those systems have evolved, it is beginning to make more noise, so I am definitely interested in the gen2.
