Vehicle Gun Safe

Congrats on your new adventure. Yes being a LEO is an advanture. Now on to the gun issue, Big John said it best, you don't want to be a target. I would rather have and not need it, vs. needing it and not having one.
For storage purpose buy a pocket holster and install it under by the levers for the hood and gas tank. FIrst place where people look is glove box and center console. My brother once told me that he does not wish for me to bring my guns with me to his house. Well he got over that. Good luck with whatever you decide.
 
There was a pretty slick set up where a guy put it in the center console (not a 4Runner, but would still work the same).

Kind of like this:

But I agree that you need it on your person always. I love my GP100 6" and will most likely get an SP101 snub for carry.
 
As others have pointed out, the safest place for it is on your hip in your holster. A holstered gun is a safe gun -- it can't go off as long as it is in the holster, as the holster protects the trigger guard. You are actually increasing your chances of a negligent discharge by removing the gun from the holster. And a gun in your car is more likely to get stolen than a gun on your hip.

If you can swing it, a lockbox in your girlfriend's apartment would be better than a lockbox in your car.

You can install a DAC SportSafe. I won one of these in a raffle. I thought about it on the passenger side rear floorboard. Unfortunately Illinois is a little goofy about conceal/carry so I just have it mounted somewhere in the house with some things in it.
 
I kinda got an idea for you. if you don't want to send the money on safe's and stuff you can always put it where your factory jack and tools are. when my friends and I went camping/mudding/hunting we didn't have room for the ammo and 2 extra 9 mls. Since I took the jack and tools out we put them there. the thing is though I don't live with guns and I am not sure how you would feel safe in your position. I bet you could rig up a lock but thought that this would be an option if interested. Good luck being a cop I'll bet it'll be tough. just don't pull me over. LOL!
 
No LEO here, but here's my slant.

I have a carry permit, and if you see me, I am armed. I am NOT the bully type at all, but living in the Memphis area, and traveling as I do, odds are when you least think it could be possible, you will need some protection.

I say be as well schooled and prepared as possible. We all hope we will never have to use our tools, and most of us hope that no one even KNOWS we are armed. Unfortunately this is part of today's society, and in my opinion the SMART ones are prepared.

Accept the responsibility, be careful and above all, respect others.

Well I guess first thing's first haha. I need to get sworn in! But yeah, I am super excited to starting my career off, and I understand that I will be carrying off duty (I just need to get a baby glock .40 rather than my Glock 22 for that).

And as for the girlfriend thing... she's not goin' anywhere haha. I'm slowly warming her up to the whole gun thing. The first time she saw it I had to break the gun down for her. And it's not her that's against the gun, it's her parents having it in their house.

My buddy from the academy just got a job with a wealthier city out here, and they supplied him w/ a home gun safe... now that would be nice!

Totally understandable that your GF's parents don't want a gun in the house. Perhaps they will be more understanding once you are an LEO. Couldn't hurt to have the trigger lock with you just to give them some peace of mind.

I'm not sure what the pistol range situation is around your neck of the wounds, but try taking your GF to one and let her have a go. Careful though, newbies usually get the shakes :)

And as a total aside - not all LEO's carry full time...and what really annoys/aggrieves me is seeing LEO's (or indeed anyone with a carry permit) drinking alcohol at a bar while carrying. So reckless.
 
I think taking your GF to a shooting range and letting her fire a few rounds might put her at ease a little. It worked with my wife, but she wasn't anti gun person, she just didn't know anything about them. You also want her to know how to handle weapons, just in case.
 
Get a glock 23. its a subcompact. 40 cal. i love mine. i live in arizona which is a very liberal gun state. i carry concealed. took the class got the tshirt. we have competitions out here every week at shooting ranges. guns are everywhere. like many other posters on this thread, if you see me, i have protection. i have limo tint on my 4 urban runner. people can't see in even if they wanted to. i have the little black lock box and i keep it under the passenger seat when i go to my wife's school. she too is a teacher. she didn't like guns but i took her to some of my competitions and she saw the mechanics and the safeness of the guns i have. my advise would be for you to ease her into the gun world. just let her know safety is your number 1 priority. GOOD LUCK. go shoot a uspsa or something. practice makes prepared and that way when a situation happens...YOU DON'T WASTE AMMO...HAHAHAHA

Daily G23 carrier here. Technically the G23 is a compact and the G27 is the subcompact but either one is a fine choice. Not poopin' on USPSA as I'm unfamiliar with it, but IDPA is a fantastic way to hone skills like shooting from cover, reloads, weapon transitions, as well as to try out gear placement and clothing. And you do it while a bunch of people are watching, so there is actually a little stress innoculation taking place. Just don't try to beat a time, focus on doing things correctly. Remember, slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

I'm trying to get her to go shooting with me, maybe a less packed shooting range (she was all flustered when we took my golf clubs to the driving range and people were watching her hahaha). So I might first let her try out my dad's Ruger 9mm, not as much kick as my .40.

On a side note, how is that G27? That's the baby glock .40 correct?
