Vin Decoder

Some time ago, I printed the Vin Decoder for my '07 Sport. I tried it with the wife's 2002 Tacoma. Her first Vin digit is a 5 , not J or 1/4. Anyone know if this is California made or the old country??

First digit:

J = Japan
1 = USA Nummi Plant (California)
2 = Canada TMMC Plant
4 = USA TMMK Plant (Kentucky)
5 = USA TMMI (Indiana), TMMCA (California?) TMMTX (Texas) Plants

I think all first gen Tacomas are made in NUMMI (Fremont, CA). I don't remember Tacomas being made anywhere else except for DoubleCabs. IIRC, I think in MY 2006, some Tacomas (reportedly DoubleCabs) are made in Mexico.

Anyone found a reliable VIN decoder for the 2008 Toyota vehicles? Unfortunately, the VIN decoder thread doesn't work with the 2008 vehicles.

Are you looking for 2008 Toyota in general or 4Runners? The 4Runner info in that thread is still accurate.

Toto,

Yes, the VIN information is correct up to the year, but the information beyond that for my 2008 4Runner isn't listed. The VIN decoder on the Toyota page hasn't been updated in several years. The information for digit 11 on the referenced page is incorrect for my truck. The 11th character in the VIN of my truck is "K".

Thanks,

Well, I did a lot of Google searching. All I can find is that K is a valid plant code for Toyota Motor Corp. (Japan), but I can't find anything more specific.

Here is Toyota's own VIN decoder sheet for 2008.

Thanks for the info. I was able to find the same information when I started searching for VIN information for my truck, but I wasn't able to find anything specific for the plant location.

Thanks again for your help.
