Volant cold air intake system

Why would a company like Volant sell something that needs to be modified to get it to work properly??? Why is the hole that fits next to the fender so big ? Why is the hole the tube that comes from the throttle body fits in so big ? it won't seal right at both ends without some help. On the fender side I purchased a rubber fernco connector 4" X 3" the 4" side need to be heated a bit to get it to fit, but I was not able to get the box close enough to the opening in the fender, so I trimmed about 1" off the part that stuck out of the volant box then put the fernco connector on and the trimmed off the 3" part right up to the edge and the took the cup part off the toyota air box and twisted it into that opening, as for the other end after installing the tube onto the throttle body I took the rubber piece that I had removed from the fernco connector and trimmed it to fill in the opening around where the pipe fits into the volant box and also plugged the hole the faces the front of the vehicle with a fernco cap,,,,,,,,,,:party:

Honestly I think the Volant and all the other Cold Air Intake systems are not worth the money. Toyota did a good job with our intakes, they're actually factory cold air intakes, pulling cool air from the wheel well. If you remove the Hydrocarbon Filter (HCF) and drop in a High-Flow air filter (such as K&N, AFE Pro Dry) you should be expecting to get the same gains you would from an aftermarket CAI. I know my MPGs have increased from doing this.

I have heard that also, but in the toyota air box the air comes in the bottom of the filter then has to turn 90 degree's to go through the filter and then turn another 90 degrees on exit, plus what ever it has to go through to get to the throttle body, Don't you think that might slow the air down? with the volant and the k&n as well, the air comes straight into the filter and exits without making any turns, don't you think that would get the air into the throttle body the quickest? AND isn't that what a cold air intake is designed to accomplish ?
Also do you think that volant and k&n would invest the money in research and design if what the make ins't somewhat better? not all consumers are idiots, someone would have figured out by now that they were wasting time as well as money. Toyota has to build it to pass the emission/import regulations, volant and k&n might not have that much to worry about.

I see what you're saying but just because the air has to make a few turns doesn't mean it's going any slower into the engine. That is unless there is restriction, such as the Toyota air filter. Also, I'm sure the air from the aftermarket CAI is probably warmer than the stock intake. Also, it's not like an aftermarket CAI is forced induction.
 
My Volant uses the part from the Toyota air box that fits into the opening in the wheel well and is totaly sealed from the engine compartment. That would make it just as cold as the air in the Toyota air box. How can you say that air isn't slowed down by being forced to make 2 90 degree turns in less than a foot? Stand in front of a fan and see how the air moves, now point it at the wall at 90 degrees and see if you can tell the difference, better yet have someone through a baseball at you then have them bounce it off the wall at you, any difference there? why is a straight exhaust better than one that has bends in it? I'm not an expert or even close, this is just my thought process of why I installed the Volant in my 4Runner, and why I'm going to make and install a 3" inch exhaust with a Magnaflow muffler, quicker in and quicker out, the I'm going to attempt making a 3" Y pipe

The stock CAI, and yes it is a CAI takes air strictly from the passenger side fender.

The Volant has a GAPING hole in the air box located within the engine bay which sole purpose is to make more noise. At low speeds it sucks in hot radiant air.

Not rocket science, at all.

If you read my original post, I stated that I had to modify it to function the wya that I thought it should, there is no air from the engine compartment entering the air box, it is modified to function as the Toyota air box withe the execption the air make no 90 degree turns, it's straight to the throttle body, Sorry about calling you Mister Hilarious

If you have a couple pics to explain I think that would help us visualize what you are saying. Everyone it just making assumptions.
 
The Volant does more for looks when you lift the hood than performance on the road and sometimes buyers look at that and the sound (sound=performance,right?) as worth the cost but from a performance standpoint it's a poor bang-for-the-buck mod.

I did the deckplate mod on mine and I don't really notice any difference whether it's open or closed but that experiment only cost me $10 and the sound is cool.:fro:

Stick with stock.

I'm sorry, but your analogies with the baseball and the fan are way off. A vehicle's intake is not like a fan, it's more like a vacuum. The engine is sucking the air in, the world is not blowing the air into the intake. If you wanna try it yourself, you could take two straws. Both straws must have the same diameter of the tube. However one straw must be straight and the other must be all curvy and bendy...again, the tube being the same diameter. If you breathe in through both straws, you won't feel any more starved for air from the bendy one than with the straight one. The air is not being thrown into the tube, it is being sucked in, at the same speed for both intakes...the engine can only suck so much air without forced induction. If it makes you feel better trying to rationalize spending $300 on a better looking engine bay, then more power to you.


Also, by closing up the gap that is in the engine bay, you are pretty much defeating the purpose of the Volant as you're pulling the same amount of air from the wheel well with both intakes. I'm not trying to argue here I'm just using logic.
 
I believe there MAY be some improvement over a stock air box/filter but only at very high RPMs where the increased airflow might benefit from a somewhat more direct path to the engine. Again, at normal RPMs, i.e. where we spent 99% of our time, there is zero benefit to any aftermarket systems, stock is perfectly capable of providing all the demand. As was already mentioned, flooring a normally aspirated motor simply creates a vacuum with a airflow rate proportional to rpm. My guess is that approaching redline with the higher flow rates, these systems can flow enough additional air to make a slight, i.e. 3-5 hp over stock. So, if you live at redline go for it, it's your money. For everyone else who rarely sees north of 3000, stick with stock and save your money for something more useful than 5hp at redline.
 
Yeah but like what was said, that same minimal gain can be achieved by just removing the HCF and dropping in a high-flow air filter with these trucks.

Hello, no need to be sorry, but like I said I'm no expert, and I understand what your saying, I didn't pay $300.00 for it, I purchased it right here from another member, All I was trying to say is, I can't understand why Volant would make something that needs to be modified to work correctly, I would think that there should be no air entering the Volant box from the engine bay, when there is clearly three locations for warm air from the engine to enter the box, except in my Volant box the only air that gets in is cold air from the wheel well, I will try to get some pictures to help show what I did, Thank You
