VSC Off, ATRAC On Mod complete!

2wd ATRAC on / VSC off DONE!

I finally got the Holy Grail of this mod...

As you may know this mod allows for VSC off, center diff unlocked operations while in 4wd. What was missing is the ability to run 2wd VSC off. I got it:D :bigok:

To use 2wd VSC off is strictly a procedural variation of the existing mod.
The following in conjunction with the mod gets you 2wd w/ATRAC and no VSC:

- Select 4hi and allow it to engage.
- Select VSC off via the installed switch
- Select 2wd. Feel for the telltale 'normal' light thump as it reverts to 2wd. You are now in 2wd w/no VSC and fully functional ATRAC.

NOTE:- Both 4wd indicator lights will flash, the VSC off light will be steady. I drove like this and did the cycle many times with no ill effects. I did two, full 360+ donuts too:biggrin2:

I will also add there's no audible evidence that in it's "state of confusion" it attemping to do any mode changes. If you listen carefully you can hear relays clicking under the glovebox when the 4WD is attempting to change modes. When driving in 2wd or 4wd with the added VSC off switch in use I hear no clicking.

- Before shutdown or reselecting 4wd shut the VSC off switch to off (ungrounded position).

I have a dumb question. could this work with a 2wd 4th gen? I love to power slide and drift my truck but some times the safety crap kicks in and steals power. I would love to turn it off completely. I would even go as far as turning the ABS off.

You have a button on the left side of the steering wheel that'll help. To get rid of it totally pull the two wire push on connector that's on the master cylinder. If you like those results put a switch in:D

The 'downside' is you'll just have the one-wheel-peel (no limited slip).

Thanks. everytime I get in my truck the first thing i do i turn the VSC off then put the belt on! Thanks again I see what happens:hatsoff:

Ran into this wheelin today.

Definitely doing this mod tomorrow morning.

Great write-up/forward. Found on search.

4W powerslides FTW!

absolute NOOB question coming here...

VSC = Vehicle Safety Control

ATRAC = ?????

I am completely missing the point on this mod. What is the point of disabling VSC and being able to keep ATRAC going with 4WD Hi/Lo and 2WD?

What is the advantage? Sorry, I don't know what all this stuff mean :*(

ATRAC meaning: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/5036-how-does-atrac-work.html

VSC uses the brakes to control the truck under various conditions, sliding, spinning wheels, etc. The biggest issue most folks had was that it cuts engine power substantially under certain conditions, it also prevents power slides on fast dirt roads. This mod will bypass the VSC to allow you all the wheelspin you need without going through the long cycle of locking/unlocking the center diff. It also allows you to keep the diff open for fast dirt driving without the VSC spoiling the fun (although it can be dangerous, so use at your own peril).

Quote from Bulldog on 120.

VSC is vehicle stability control. A-TRAC is active traction control.

The mod is to allow for power slides, donuts, etc. VSC is pretty much an electronic nanny that kills safe fun when you're in snow, sand, mud, etc. 2008+ 4Runners have the VSC off button from the factory.

Just finished the mod.

I'm going to go wheelin' now and test it out.

:biggrin2::biggrin2::biggrin2::biggrin2:

Day and night difference. You can really muscle through stuff without computer interference, just watch out for the rocks :whip2:.

Love the mod, definitely worth 30 min of my time. (2nd day wheelin with it)

Would pulling out the connector, and wiring a switch still allow it to keep the 2WD VSC/TRAC off after 21 mph? The push button allows it to turn off until then, but after that, it turns back on.

I don't know if he does but I sure do! And I want to know the same thing.

I haven't seen anyone mod the 2wd model so that you can exceed 21mph without the VSC coming back on. That doesn't mean it hasn't been done:D

The premise of the 4wd mod is to trick the system into thinking the center-diff is locked. When the center diff is locked the VSC is programmed to 'off' (from the factory). Given the absence of those components/logic streams I wouldn't know where to begin.

so i have read the whole thread and now understand that it allows for fun and donuts and such but how does it exactly help in off road situations? thanks and sorry if i somehow missed it... i read every post

This mod for the pre-08 4wd's is probably the most helpful in snow driving. It allows you pull out in traffic with the assurance that the VSC won't cut the engine power when you need it most. The only other way to do it is to lock the center diff. Most of the time roads tend be mostly clear with patchy slick stuff so you don't want the center diff locked or it'll bind. Above 20-25mph simply flick the switch to normal mode and enjoy the protection provided by VSC.

Off-roading it's nice because it handles better, If you have anything better than super-slick conditions the center-diff being open just feels better, steers better etc. Without the mod the VSC would cut engine power at the slightest little slip. Off-road you could just leave the center diff locked and it works great, this just feels a little better IMHO.

You would need to incorporate a relay as the '08 button is a momentary type switch. This guy had a switch for sale, maybe he still has the part #, I know he sold the switch. Traction Control Switch - Toyota - 4Runner . org Forum

:cheers:

Anyone have a VSC switch lying around? I am going to be doing this mod with the switch and would be happy to post up the steps, pic's and wiring diagram, if I can find a switch cheep!!! :whip2:

Not a member of Toyota 120 so I couldn't ask over there, but has anybody figured out how to disable traction control TCS as well? I'm planning on doing the VSC switch this weekend, but would love to be able to turn both off as I please.

so i'm very interested in doing this mod and i've read both your threads. from what i understand, this is the second iteration of the mod, the first being the switch hooked to the abs plug which disables both vsc & atrac, and this one being a better fix-only disabling vsc. basically, you wired the switch to the abs plug first, and later ditched that setup and wired it in the manner laid out in this thread. am i correct? also, am i to assume that my 05 v8 se is going to have the same under-dash modules as your v6? same wiring, etc...

I feel like this is a very important subject to have a strong grasp of, but don't feel confident on it. I have a 2009 Sport 4WD, with the VSC off button between the center diff and RSCA switch.

So I get the part from the manual where you disable VSC (which apparantly also disables A-TRAC at the same time is that right??) if you're stuck in mud or snow so you won't get reduced power from spinning and can rock the vehicle out is necessary. So how else is this handy....is it a good idea when offroading in mud or sand to just use this disable feature from the get go??
