Smart you are... I wish I would have done that. I ended up needing an new O2 sensor after having the new muffler for about 8 months, and the bolts just came right out.

I really appreciate the follow up GMV4K. I am surprised to hear the Walker didn't last a year without significant rust. Great to know as I look for a replacement muffler!
Hope the Walker 55054 holds up over time......
My 55054 arrived this week, along with the 54081 tailpipe. Not packed very well by Amazon, so it the muffler had a couple of small dings in it. But it does have some slag welds, along with some ragged creases from whatever jig was used to bend it. I guess I was expecting a bit too much for the reasonable price I paid. I'll spray paint with high temp aluminum and install this weekend. Will definitely use anti seize on the 02 sensor threads! Stock original is leaking and won't pass inspection next month. It's a muffler....We'll see how it goes.View attachment 193

Walker QuietFlow SS 55054 Muffler - Cut or Crush
With the end of March approaching, I tried to sneak an inspection in on my 1998 Limited; but it failed as expected. Take a look at the length of the stub exiting the new muffler flange. It looks like it would be a nice spigot fit into the tailpipe flange, but there is no way it will clear the tailpipe to properly crush the gasket. I have read previous threads where some members double stacked gaskets, but I am not going to go that route. Was thinking of cutting the stub just above the gasket thickness using the Dremel. Was also thinking of taking a ball peen and hammering the edge inward so the stub slides inside the tailpipe as I torque the flanges. Appreciate any opinions or another approach if others have run into this.

It's been 3 years now and my Walker muffler and tailpiece are still on the truck. There are rust holes and it seems like it's been rusting from the inside out. I think someone mentioned drilling a hole in the muffler could help. I believe it's double lined so I don't think it'll effect anything.
I ended up buying another Walker muffler just waiting to be installed. I figured for the price and if it'll last 3/4 years I'm ok with that. But I then I saw the Gibson deal and should have jumped on that.... I'll try drilling a hole in it and I'll report back.
Anyway...
I found that the Toyota OEM exhaust gaskets are a lot thicker then the Walker ones, but they were expensive.

Thanks for the part numbers. Bought the Fel-Pro gaskets you recommended and both flanges fit up fine. Also sprayed the muffler with high temp aluminum paint prior to installation. Hoping it will last for several years. Back to the inspector on Monday.

3 to 4 years is terrible. My stock muffler lasted 10 years but the cheap one I got from Napa only lasted 4. I'm now using a JBA stainless steel muffler with stainless steel hardwear. Some people dont like the sound of the JBA but what ever brand you go with get the stainless steel. Spend the money once & be done with it.
I had to stop by Advance this AM to pick up some Felpro 60512s, they look much nicer, twice as thick and made in Japan.
Because THIS is the current situation on my first attempt from this morning with the thin-ass Walker gasket and the cheap-ass walker 54681:

Ironic that the Walker gasket is so thin considering the crap fitment of the muffler to the stock cat means it needs to be more than twice as thick.
Look at that flimsy flange bend due to the poor fitment.
Good thing this POS only cost 107 delivered. :flipoff:
I hope it lasts more than a couple of years.

I got a pro tip from a real professional (too late to help me)... exhaust systems are mandated by law to be warrantied for 5 years... therefore OEM components (including fasteners) are almost always the highest quality parts you can buy for an exhaust system.
Because THIS is the current situation on my first attempt from this morning with the thin-ass Walker gasket and the cheap-ass walker 54681:
