Wanting a new exhaust sound

Ive been debating just cutting the exhaust off just after the rear axle. Has anyone done this? How do you think it will sound?

if my memory serves me wright, it is just pipe after the rear axle and if that is the case then it wont sound any different, but you might get some exhaust smell in the car.
if you want a better/different sound then replace the muffler ($45-$100) and or do the air box mod ($6) or put a pod filter on ($40-$300) instead of the air box. that will make it sound louder and give you a few horse power and you will have a little more throttle response if you do any of these mods.

I think you may have misunderstood him. Or maybe I am....

But yeah there are a lot of people that have cut it off just after the axle. However most of them do it to keep it from getting crushed on rocks.

I'm sure if you find one of them they could get you a sound clip.

It's confusing actually. He is looking for a different sound but I would not expect much sound change if you cut the exhaust before the axle. He is better off welding in a decent muffler.

I have the 3rz. Fancy cat back exhaust. Nearly 25hp+

Reality:
My original exhaust was rotten and had began to fall apart, so I boutght everyhing but the tailpipe. Welded a 90 on the end of the muffler. Next couple weeks some dick cut my muffler off, hinking t was the cat I assume. (Faith in humaniy lost)
So I welded it back on and ended up smashing it up on click rock, ca. So now I have 3 feet of piping wih a 90 pointied out sideways. Sounds super good I think. For a 4 banger. Sure I get the ricer back pressure, but hey, dont like it, dont ht beside me.

yeah I agree with you about how little it will affect the sounds, amd that he should just go for a new muffler.

it just seemed like you thought he was referring to cutting the muffler off completely.

Just be careful about cutting/shorting your exhaust system...there's a reason the exhaust pipe is run all the way to the back of the vehicle...carbon monoxide! I know this sounds over-cautious...and your hearing blah, blah, blah...but it's truly a major concern. It's not as bad when your driving out on the streets, where you have moving air to help keep fresh air in the cabin (unless you live in LA...lol)!!! But, what about when your off road? Especially if you do a lot of slow trail/rock climbing...sitting and idling, waiting for the guy in front of you to complete the obstacle!! Very easy for the gases to creep up through your rig and poison you and your passengers. Takes a very small amount of exposure to carbon monoxide for a child to be effected.

Look at the picture in the Bumper List thread of the Savage rear bumper. If you cut yours like the one in the picture I really doubt you will have any issues. I also doubt it will make any noticeable change in sound.

I'm assuming when he says "air box mod" he is referring to the Deck Plate mod or the Intake silencer removal mod. A quick Google search will bring them both up real quick. Both are very popular mods. I did both and loved them. I have sense closed off the deck plate permanent do to the amount of dust I get in the air box with my truck being primarily off-road. That and I put a new muffler on and it sounds cool enough with that!!
