wanting to change tranny fluid need suggestions

Hey guys, i have a 99 with a auto tranny. i wanna change the fluid or get some advice if a should or shouldent change or fluch it, it has 146,000 on it and im not sure if its ever been done, i was going to pull the pan and clean the screen then just refill it and run it for a while then change the fluid a few times to let it work out the old fluid, iv also herd its bad to have them flushed, im unsure what i should do, reason i ask is when truck is cold and you take off and come to quick stop it almost acts like its in nuetral for a sec then jumps into gear, but only when cold and you stopped quickly almost like its not down shifting soon enough....its got me confused and help or suggestions from any one would very much be appreciated......thanks guys

I'm in the process of changing my transmission oil too and I opted for the several changes method rather than the flush. I've got 120k on mine with an unknown fluid change history and I've heard horror stories of attempted flushes on high mileage units.

Perhaps you could do a change first and inspect the condition of the old oil. That may tell a story and give you a direction to go in.

I would just go ahead and do the drain and fills. When you drop the pan I would suggest going and buying a change kit at the auto parts store, should be around $30 and will have a new filter and gasket. That way you don't have to use RTV sealant, which works well but is a PIA to scrape off each time. When you drop the pan release the front sway bar to give yourself a bit of extra room, also don't forget to unbolt the check and fill tube from the block and split it into 2 pieces.

thanks guys, yeah the fluid is def dirty, i wanna pull the pan and do filter and fluid change instaed of a flush, any idea how much fluid it takes when you drain and remove the pan? any other input form any one would be nice thanks

You'll probably need around 5 quarts. When I bought my 4runner I did the drain and fill without removing the pan. I did it 3 times with regular fluid and then filled it the last time with Dexron VI.

Actually, I'm having my tranny fluid drained and refilled tomorrow for the first time. Figured it would be good to follow the manual's guidelines. (Manual says to change at 60k. I'm at 64k right now.)
