I got this winch a while ago, its a Warn XD9000i. I got it from a trailer dealer who took it off a trailer some one traded in. They didnt know if it works or not, just wanted it gone, so I got it cheap. Perfect.
Well it didnt work. Haha. All it would do is click. The solenoids all check out, but the motor wouldan't spin. We took it off to find it seized from corrosion and all 4 of the brushes were frozen.
Even though they were corroded, they didnt look to be in bad shape, so we took it apart, cleaned it and put it back together.
Then decided to take the other end apart and re-grease the gears
All greased up and ready to go back on.
I got a free cable from a friend with a broken winch, roller fairlead for $1 at a yard sale, spent about $25 on a hook, hardware, and electrical connectors, and it works! I did however, have to build a bumper to mount it on using the TG winch mount.
The top part around was a little bent so the stock solenoid cover wouldnt fit, so I just made out of some sheet metal we had lying around.
I quickly got over having to pull out the controller every time. Did the run it under the wiper thing to hold it out of the way.. meh.
Saw this on the web, and I was sold.
Parts list includes.. 1 20' 3 prong extension cord, 1 trailer wiring kit, 1 2 way switch with safety cover, and 1 three position momentary toggle and some diamond plate.
I used the extension cord because it 3 wires wrapped and protected, and readily available.
Starting from the winch and moving back to the cab, I cut the one of the ends off the extension cord, stripped some wires and attached it to the winch.
This picture is stolen from 4x4 wire, as I didnt take one. Opps.
Next, cut the cord about 2 feet away from the winch for a quick disconnect, using 3 of the 4 pins on the trailer connector. This way if I ever want to take the winch or bumper off, I dont have to un-do my wiring.
Ran the rest of the cord through the firewall and in to my open dash spot. Cut the Diamond plate to fit the DIN opening, drilled 2 holes for the switches and wired them up. Works Mint, I never have to go digging for the remote, and I can still plug the remote in if I wanted to.
Flip on and go!
