WarnerD9's Build thread

Ah, I thought he was distracted by the two dogs that you almost ran over near the end of the clip.

Yeah... Those are my dogs as well... Normally they run behind or along side the vehicle so they were very confused.

Just ordered some 4:56 diffs and upgraded rear axles from Nitro Gear for the Runner. Hope to have them in mid next week.

And some videos

Slide 4Runner sliding down - YouTube
Hells gate 5th Gen 4Runner Hell's Gate - YouTube

If you listen close on the Hell's gate video, you can hear the rear bumper stopping the vehicle from going over backwards who knows how many times. Thanks @cbioffroadfab! The first run for pictures was flawless thanks to a focused spotter, and you'll see the results of the second video run with a distracted spotter.
Everytime I watch videos of Hell's Gate my butthole puckers. I don't think I could ever run that climb. I'd cry like a girl.

Sweet! I'm thinking about the same!

Can you post exactly what you are getting from nitro gear? I know they sell kits but curious to see exactly what you are getting.

Justdifferentials.com diffs PN: GPFJCRUISER-4.56-4

Front locker?

What upgrades to the axle?

4.56 and front ARB locker on my short list

I'll reuse my front ARB.

Stronger chromoly shafts. Upgrading because the stock ones will already be out, they are pretty cheap, and because of the larger tires. Cheap insurance in my mind. Nothing wrong with the stock ones.

The Nitro ring and pinions allow you to use the stock housing and other critical parts. ARB would leave you to believe that you'd have to buy new lockers, pumpkins, etc. but these guys designed to avoid that saving us about $3,000. That's why you should support them. Carl Montoya was great to work with, I believe he's the owner and Mark Hawley from MetalTech referred me to him.

Before my opinion becomes any more biased on the before and after results... I was getting about 14-15MPG combined. Slow acceleration, trans always seemed be searching for the right gear at 70+MPH. And have me reason to seriously contemplate an engine upgrade considering the lack of power and the weight of the vehicle.

Seemed to crawl ok, crawl control never worked to well. Computer always seemed to underestimate power needed, then would proceed to overcompensate.

I'm running a 34.6x10.75r17 (converted to imperial) and I'm right around 5,000lbs loaded.

That's all I've got.

You sure on that? Stock TE curb weight is 4750 on Toyota's website.

I need to run it on a scale to be sure but I think I'm right around/under max GVWR when fully loaded so yes I am probably understating by a few hundred pounds. The 5,000 doesn't include unsprung weight like tires, wheels, etc...

Are you calling me fat? Just kidding I know I'm overweight in more weighs;) than one!

Going with 4.56 gears was a huge improvement. My truck went from feeling like it was struggling to move it's own weight to feeling darn right zippy. It no longer gear hunts going up hills and for some reason I'm getting better gas mileage at 80 mph.

There was snow in the LaSals but none on the rocks, it was a perfect day. Hit me up when you're headed down.
Dang, what happened to this week? Thought I would have 4-5 routes planned out, camping spots ID'd, and gear loaded up by Thursday, rolling through Cisco, UT by 2pm on Friday. Here it is 9pm on Friday, only got off the last call 90 minutes ago, and have about 100 unread emails to go through. Sucks, as this is my "slow time" and I'll soon be physically stuck back east for like 7-8 weekends, if I can stand it.

Tony, you heading to Moab area this weekend? I'm thinking I might do a early afternoon run of Metal Masher or Steel bender, tomorrow. Maybe Golden Spike or Lockhart Basin on Sunday.

Would love to... However the rig is in the shop getting the new gears. Next wknd? Sorry man!

So, how are you liking the 4.56 gears? Still want to unload that Shrockworks bumper? I got wedged in to a big rock today and completely destroyed my OEM bumper.

Still trying to find a competent alignment shop in Grand Junction. 3 strikes so far, my caster and toe are good at this point, but camber is visibly off by several degrees.

Are your spindles bent?

Don't think so. I had stock UCAs and LR UCAs for about 71K miles, both with at least 4 degrees of caster. It took 3 tries to get it aligned properly after installing the lift and LR UCAs. Recently switched to TC UCAs. Running half worn 285/70/17 Duratracs on ATX Mojaves, which I think are 0 offset, 4.5" BS, 17x8. Had 0 rubbing with these tires when new, with the LR UCAs.

1st try - negative caster, tires rubbing all over body mount and everything else at even slight turn of the steering wheel, on flat ground. Toyota Dealer.

2nd try - mom'n pop shop - 4.2 and 4.3 caster, 0.0 and 0.3 camber. Seemed perfect, but when I went off road, both tires rubbed bad on body mount and fenders when turned and stuffed. Noticed driver's side rear eccentric adjuster was all the way "in"

3rd try - same mom'n pop shop - they didn't believe that there were front and rear adjusters until I showed them, then they gave me every excuse they could think of why they couldn't/wouldn't/shouldn't do anything other than what they had already done. I told them exactly how to do it (max caster with rear bolt, adjuster camber on front, repeat), paid for 2 alignments, and offered to pay them whatever they wanted to do it as I asked, but they declined. In the end, they turned the rear adjusters all of the way out, and "did the best they could" with the front adjusters. They refused to give me a print out, or tell me what the readings were, other than to say that toe is good, but camber is out. There is visible negative camber on both sides, something like 1-3 degrees I think. It drives fantastic, and the tires don't rub even at full lock/stuff.

4th try - Taking it to a Toyota off-road, specialty shop. They mostly do Cruisers, buggies/SAS, etc. but said they would give it a shot. They'll also be doing a BMC, so hopefully that will help with rubbing if they don't get a lot of caster.
