First off, let me say that I only put this thread here because this sub forum gets the most attention. This thread should really go to the comments and suggestions sub forum but that forum doesn't really get a lot of views. After this poll/thread is concluded it will get moved. Let me also say that us moderators are not here to bust skulls and keep everyone in a straight and narrow. This is a community based forum and this board is here for everyone. We do our best to keep the majority happy. We are however going to enforce the rules that at one point was asked for by what seemed to be the majority voice in another thread http://www.toyota-4runner.org/off-topic/131379-how-make-site-better.html. I am specifically talking about the classifieds rules. What I would like to know is does the majority think that the rules are sufficient, too strict or not strict enough? What, if anything needs to be changed in the classified rules?

Some of the things that I have heard complaints about:
1) Putting a price in the title. A lot of people say that it's redundant because the price is usually in the thread. Also some people don't like it because if they lower their price then they cannot adjust the price in the title of the thread unless a mod edits it for them.

I can completely agree with the above and can see how putting the price in the title can be annoying since you cannot modify the title yourself.

2) Not being fair about enforcing the rules on everyone.

Keep in mind that there are tons of classified threads added every day. We cannot always do everything to please everyone. The mods here take a lot of time out of our day to help moderate this board and make it a better place for everyone. If some of you feel targeted than I honestly do apologize for it. Just know that you are not being singled out and we cannot catch everything or sometimes don't have time to fix/move everything.

3) What was my thread missing? It's been there for weeks and now it's gone!

Please read the classified rules. They are simple to follow but hopefully this thread will either confirm that they are sufficient or that there is a problem with them.

---------------------------------------------------

So, what does the majority say? Is everything "A-OK" or do we need to modify the rules?

I just have one thing to add. PLEASE keep this thread on topic and civilized. If you have something to say that doesn't pertain to classified rules and you think that it has to do with forum improvement then post your input in the linked thread above.

I think the price in the title could be dropped... sometimes prices change. There are a lot of people who end up deleting their threads and reposting all over again because the price was too high in the title. Also some people have multiple items for sale.

I never saw any drawback to bumping with a new price, though, it is a forum anyway.

I agree with COB, the rules right now are quite easy to follow. I also agree with removing the price-in-title stipulation. Other than that, the rules are quite clear on how to post a successful classifieds thread. It makes things much easier to "shop" when the titles and ad's follow protocol.

Just my 2 cents of course. Do with it as you wish. :)

I would agree that the price in the title is not necessary as long as it is in the post. I have no complaints and think that most everyone does a pretty good job overall. Thanks for reaching out to keep the site working well for everyone!

The classified rules have been posted. ALL threads not conforming to the rules will be deleted without warning.

So for the rules we have:

A) Thread title must include at a minimum: FS or FT, Item(1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th gen), Price and Location.
For Example: FS: 4th GEN Carpet Floor Mats - Tan, $50 Denver, CO.
  • Keep in mind thread title price can be changed to match a lowered price by OP by asking mod.

B) All Threads must contain the following information
---1) What is for sale/trade (model, specs, etc.)
---2) Condition
---3) Price/What you want to trade for
---4) Location of item
---5) At least one picture of the item for sale or for trade

remove 2, 4 and 5.

C) No "Feeler" Threads - Its either for sale or it isn't.

D) No Bidding Threads

E) Moderators lock Classified Threads that have not had any activity in 90 days or when the part is announced SOLD.

E) Threads not complying with the rules will be deleted without notice.
notes in red above.

im sure im in the minority here..

while I do think it would be smart to have them, and make for a better chance at a sale, I don't think they should be required. if someone posts up a terrible FS add, they just wont sell anything. that is their problem, and not the forums concern.

posting pictures on this site is a PITA, and requires an outside host. that shouldn't be a reason to keep someone from posting an ad. perhaps its easier/more convenient for them to text a pic upon request, or send it directly in email.

also, I think F(its actually a 2nd E above.) should be removed. if someone doesn't adhere to the rules, they should be informed of the indiscretion, and allowed a chance to make corrections before its deleted. most of the time they have no idea they didn't do it right(especially with the rules being so strict) and would likely be more than happy to make the requested changes.

edit: oh yes, I agree with the above. remove the price from the title.

First, the rules as they are now, are a result of whining/pi$$ing/ moaning about the crappy state of the Classifieds section as a whole, this time last year.
It was total chaos.

People have continued to complain because their threads disappear because they are too lazy or too stupid to follow the rules that were decided on then. Even though there are warnings in big red letters at the top of evey section. N

If you really want to sell something, don't you think giving a potential buyer as much info as possible would help? The title is the first thing people see, and if it doesn't draw their interest, chances are they won't even open the thread.
You just lost a potential sale.

As a buyer, I look for what, where, and how much in the title on any site I'm on.
I hate reading thru a post only to find its located in east b-f CA.

The rules might seem strict, but they aren't strictly enforced, people are cut a lot of slack.

And not putting a pic in? Unless its a totally common run of the mill widget, why wouldn't you want people to see what you're selling ?
Because THEY DO !!
The first response is typically "CAN YOU POST SOME PICS?"

And pics don't have to be hosted elsewhere, this is one of the few FREE sites that allows you to upload.

That being said, if everyone wants to drop price from the title, fine.

I am pretty new here, But i think things are fine the way they are, Other than speed, But hey it's free. I honestly do not see why it's a big deal to put the price in the title, i kinda like to see it also.

I like your a a avatar !

I personally like the location in the title. If it's something huge and bulky, I probably won't want to pay for shipping so it's nice to see if it's somewhere far away or close by.

My .02

Rules should be stricter. For example, some sellers like put "Parting Out Rig" general parts that he doesn't put a price. You email the guy and ask "How much for the rear view mirror? He'll ask you to make an offer. Then you give him a fair offer, then he comes right back and says, I was off $35 for the mirror by so and so, are you willing to pay $10 more? Then I end up saying FU then.

I agree completely. it is smart. if someone wants to sell something, that is exactly how they should do it.

what I don't agree with is making it a requirement. its not the forums responsibility to make sure people post GOOD adds, and they shouldn't be trying to make it their responsibility. if they post a crappy ad, they don't sell anything. who cares?

there are already a rules in place for that specific scenario. no bidding, and must have a price listed.

I know there are already rules for this, and when I email a mod regarding this seller nothing was done about it. He knows this cup holder will sell and he's holding for the best price. Instead saying okay first $50... he ask for an offer.

Re:Re: Arm rest cup holder
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've already had a offer of $50 on the rear cup holder. I've been holding off on selling it.

Unfortunately, it is the forums responsibility, because the previous chaos made it so if for no other reason.

Check the rules on other sites, they all have them, and most are stricter, and the enforcement even more so.

It's not done to help someone sell something, its to keep things running smoothly and fairly. And to minimize complaints.

I agree about the price thing as well. Prices change and sometimes you're selling several things for multiple prices knowing well that no one is going to buy it as a set. For instance last week I sold some coil springs and some top plate spacers that I knew no one would buy together because it's too much lift to use.

I also sometimes wonder about the location, again in the previous example I planned to ship them and added shipping into the price so there was really no reason for the location. On items that are more expensive/difficult to ship it makes sense to want to see a location in the topic, but when you plan to ship it seems pointless.

Luckily no one deleted my thread, but everything also sold within 2 days so maybe no one noticed in time...

I like the other rules though, especially requiring a picture and price in the post.

I also think maybe we need something telling folks how to delete their posts and threads? It's just as easy if not easier than posting or editing the text to say "sold mods please delete"

The votes are saying to leave the classifieds the way they are but the feedback in this thread is saying to take the price out of the title.

I'm a little confused as to what the majority wants here. Would anyone have any complaints if we made it to where a price in the title isn't required?

I had a classifieds thread disappear on me not too long ago for a car I was selling. It was in the appropriate section, followed all the forum rules, had lots of pics and info, then just one day I went to check it and it was gone. Honestly, it makes me not even want to bother trying to buy or sell anything on here if it's just going to vanish without warning or even the slightest explanation.
