Weekend Sale at Discount Tire

I hope I won't upset the Discount Tire sponsors. (Can't see how I would... possibly driving more business their way.) (Mods... if you think this will upset the sponsor, feel free to pull the post.)

I was on the phone with a DT rep yesterday. I'm looking at putting 275/55/20s on my LE. I can't do the BFG Rugged Terrains like I wanted. They won't mount them. (I've called several DTs, but none will mount them.) So now I'm looking at the Continental CrossContact LX20 after reading this.

The rep told me that Friday and Saturday, they're having a sale. $100 mail in rebate on a set of four "best" rated tires. Also $100 off a set of wheels.

For the Continentals (a "best" rated tire), they've got them priced at $195 each. So that's $780 for the tires, -$100 in the mail in rebate puts me at $680. Mounting (I think) is $16/tire, so that takes the total to $744, and tax (8.25%) rolls me out the door at $805.38... for a set of best rated tires with a 70,000 mile warranty!

@OP FWIW, I have those Conti's and consider them excellent.

no glasses needed... he wanted BFGs but DT wont mount them.... so you take them somewhere else and get them mounted

I would assume because it isnt the OEM size (Costco Sams etc are the same way) but the OP doesnt say if they are willing to mount the larger size Conti or if he went back to the OEM size.

In 275/55/20, the recommended wheel width is 7.5-9.5. The LE wheel is only 7" wide (does not meet the mfr recommendation).... it's a fairly common issue since I only know of 4 tires that recommend 7" width.

Yep. I think there are 2 Continental tires and 2 General tires in 275/55 with 7" wheel width ok'd by the mfr.

The 2 Discount Tires I went to here in town wouldn't recommend or even mount the Conti's for the OEM 20" wheels.

Get a set of FJ Cruiser wheels and mount some 17" tires.

Trust me, it looks better, gives you more sidewall protection, and you don't have to worry about the 7" rim issue. You go from a handful of approved tires to hundreds.

I found a set of steelies for about 25 bucks each (came with worn FJ Cruiser Goodyears), and I have scored a second set of TRD rims that should arrive by UPS shortly.

Dammit!! Continental updated their spec sheet and the 275/55/20 now shows a 7.5-9.5 rim width... so now DT won't mount them. :doh:

Feels like I'm back at square one. I guess it's time I start considering 17" wheels like [MENTION=92049]LandCruiser[/MENTION] mentioned. Expect a new thread soon.

That's what I did. I love having the extra sidewall and wider stance.
