They didn't really "tap" into any circuit. If you follow the link to my other post, you will see that these were factory Toyota heated seats that I had installed. They literally unplugged the old seat wiring harness, plugged in the new one, and everything worked. No splicing, soldering, creating new wires, ect. Given they are factory Toyota seat heaters, I would assume they pull exactly as much power as they need to.
No deep puddles that I can think of, but this is Colorado in the winter, and unfortunately my vehicle is stuck outside while the wife gets the garage![]()
Well I got my vehicle back from the dealer today, but it's not exactly the result I was hoping for.
They now think that the Body Control Module (BCM) might be fried, and it might have been the heated seats that fried it! I spoke directly with the service manager because my service rep was having a hard time explaining it. Anyway, the manager said that he has already confirmed that the Trail and Trail Premium have different BCM's, and he said he would give me the part numbers later today.
He will be placing a call to the "Toyota Engineers" today to figure out if it is possible that my seat heaters fried the BCM, and if it is possible to install a Trail Premium BCM into my Trail. I also requested that he ask the engineers why my seat heaters worked at all! If my BCM does not support the factory heated seats, then how did they work fine for a month???
Unfortunately their diagnosis is still speculation at this point. They won't know if the BCM is truly fried until they replace it with a new one, and even then they won't know for sure that it was the heated seats that fried it.

This is no help, but I have to wonder: if these are OEM Toyota seats, and simply plug and play, why your dealer farmed this out to a third party?
Did the dealer provide the part numbers? Did you buy them from him?

The description sounds like a loose battery terminal. It's the simplest fix. Check the terminals and see if you can move them around with your bare hands. I guess it's possible that the "dealer recommended shop" unhooked the battery while installing the seat heaters.

Did they provide you with any conformation that the BCM you have does not support heated seats?
Hey BlackWorksInc,
Don't mean to put you on the spot, but does this sound legit to you.
Do the different models have different physical BCMs?
They are basically telling him that he fried the BCM (after a few months) by plugging factory seat heaters into the factory under-seat harness. Because the BCM part# is different and not properly equipped to deal with heated seats.
Sounds a little fishy to me.
Spoke with my service rep today. The "Toyota Engineers" have not got back to them yet, so he didn't have any answers for me, but he did have the part numbers:
89220-35340
89220-35250
He didn't know which was which, but luckily I have the internet! According to this site the first one is for a Trail, and the second one is actually for the Limited Package. That site does not specifically list a part for the Trail Premium, so it is possible it uses the same part as the Limited. Either way, at least now I have a price point, if they ever get an answer from the engineers.
I'm almost inclined to print out BlackWorksInc's post and take it in to the dealership, but I'm not sure they would have any idea what it all means![]()
