Hey all, we've decided to add a new sub-forum for the 3rd gen T4R (1996-2002) as a place to engage in discussions that relate specifically to the 3rd gen. However, we would like to encourage 3rd gen owners to continue to feel free to post in the General, Gallery, etc, sub-forums as we don't want to split the overall T4R community apart. This new sub-forum will just provide an additional tool for 3rd gen owners to gain quick access to info that relates specifically to their truck. Enjoy

Hey, good to hear it. Maybe some technical info with some ideas for those who want to modify the t4r. Seems most just want to take about what they have rather than sharing info on what they have done or how they did it, or where they got it. Or am i just looking a the wrong forums?

new radio

I have had my 97 limited for about a year and a half. love it. pwr ant died so I ran it up and cut the pwr. Just put a new panasonic in it yesterday and 4 new speakers. originals were 20 watt and the new ones are 260 front and 200 rear. sounds a whole lot sweeter anybody interested in the cassette/ CD & amp setup? now I gotta do new tires and a battery. am thinking of largest tires on stock rims. no lift on it either.

Shocks ?

I have a 99 SR5 4WD and I need to replace the original shocks. I'm thinking about getting the Bilsteins...Any advice or recomendations would be appreciated. I'm not looking to lift it, just want the best shocks for the money... Thanks,

Hello all,
I've just joined now but have owned 4runners since i was 17.

unfortunately in December i was a victim of snow and ice and rammed a 98 dodge ram head on. it's front was crushed in over 18 inches, while my old 88 4runner didn't even crunch 6 inches! i miss that old girl but i went and bought a 2000 3.4L 4x4 4runner bone stock and am loving it.
I too am thinking of going with the Old Man Emu suspension as it doesn't do too well on the logging roads stock.
I wouldn't mind hearing from somebody who has that setup now,

Hello to all. I have a 2001 4R, 92K, love it. About a week ago I started hearing a noise/vibration when I reached 70mph. I was on my way to New Orleans (about 500 miles). At that time I could push it on up to 76mph and the sound quit. By the time I got back home the sound had changed so that it starts at 63mph and doesn't stop all the way up to 80. I've put new tires on it (it was ready for new ones anyway), checked drive shaft and u-joints, pulled on the tires top and bottom with the wheels off ground and there is no slack as in worn wheel bearings, I checked fluid in differential and transmission and levels are good and color is good. When I put the trans in neutral at high speed, the sound is unchanged as in no association with engine rpms. Finally took it to a friendly mechanic who put it up on the rack and 2 mechs spent 15 minutes checking everything they could think of, finding nothing that seemed out of the ordinary. He suggested that I might try new shocks or go ahead and replace the drum bearings, more from a lack of ideas of what else to try than seeing any issues with them. The noise is not loud, must have windows up and radio off to hear it, but seems to be getting worse as in the wider range of speeds at which it can be heard. I hate to spend time and money on these things just as a shot in the dark. Has anyone out there had a similar experience, or have any ideas as to what might cause this? I'd appreciate any thoughts on the matter. K

Just bought a 1998 4Runner Ltd Gold Edition.

Last week I bought a 1998 4Runner Ltd Gold Edition in excellent condition.
Full leather interior and its in bone stock condition. The guy who sold me was like 60 year old never took it off road and the car was always kept in garage. He worked for the highways so have 240 k's on it, not sure how much is that in miles though .

I am not too sound about the technical details about the 4Runner and thats the reason I am here to learn more about it.

Now I want to add some changes to my 4Runner as

> Vent Visors
> Sunroof Visor
> Roof Rack (probably)

and some more in near future...

very true I also didnt find gold only the color. The last owner said this is a Gold Edition so I just took his words for granted but looks like that old guy lied to me. I will ask for some money back now. Just kidding..

BTW what is difffent in a gold edition?

Yup it was really a wicked deal. I was in no need of a new car as I alraedy have a Honda Accord but this deal was so nice that I couldnt refuse it.
I got it for a throw away price feeing bad disclosing the price.
I ran the carfax report on it and never had any claim on it and was never broken into. Every time I drive it I ask myself why this person sold it as its in absolute mind condition and he could have easily sold it for a way higher price.

Enjoying every single second of it. Going for mudding this weekend with my buddies who owns Jeep Tj's and wranglers....

I just bought a 4Runner with only 84k from a friend. I have never owned an SUV before so I am not sure how the stiff the suspension suppose to be. It seems a bit bouncy. Just want to check with owners in this forum to see if this is normal.

Yah know, I'm all for using a 4Runner for its designed use, but taking one of these gems and modding it and mudding it? Makes me a little sad, but hey -- It's not my truck.

1996 T4R Limited

Howdy!

I'm looking at buying a 1996 T4R Limited for about $4500. Hopefully I'll test drive it this weekend. I've heard alot about the "sag" in 3rd gen T4Rs. Is there anything else I should be looking for specifically in the '96? And assuming everything checks out, is $4500 a good price? I'll put up the details (miles, maintenance, etc.) as soon as the seller get back to me.

i noticed the same thing. Its due to the wear and tear of 10 yrs. I went ahead and replaced the OE shocks with bilstein HDs and the coils with 99 talls up front and OME 906s in the back. Very big improvement.:surfer:
