Finally did it.
FYI- don't fill your gas tank all the way up the day before you attempt to do this.
I didn't remove the gas tank but I did loosen up the bolts and found out the hard way that the bolts in the front are holding both the skid plate and the gas tank. When I dropped the skid plate the tank got caught on the cross brace and as I got under the 4runner I grabbed it to better position myself and it fell on me. Lucky the wife was able to hear me or else I would have needed to hold that thing up and reach for the jack some how.
I use a fan to blow all the fumes away as I welded. No need to remove the tank. It's a pain in the ass but doable. In the end everything

In the rust belt. I would remove your tank to properly fix that inner rail as it will be rotted out. Plus you can check the tank all out along with all the evap hoses while your there.
I have removed 3 3rd gen tanks. Mostly not too bad. I also empty the tank by using the return line to pump the gas out. It just safer to do so and I cant see any other way to repair and weld that inner frame rail properly without removing the tank.
Now If your just plating the lower control arm bracket itself. It could be done without pulling the tank . If you dont have any fumes or gas leaks.
However if the bottom of the frame is rotted out which is mostly why these lower control arm brackets come off the frame it really would be best to fix the frame and strengthen that area before replacing or plating that bracket.

Where I live we don't get much snow so there's no crazy rust on it. I Just wanted to weld the bracket on.
I didn't realize that the center bolt holds the tank in place. Also I didn't think I would be doing this yesterday so I filled up the gas tank and forgot I had filled it, until it fell. Nothing bad happened it just caught me off guard

Good news. Glad you got it fixed.
I am not that fortunate..
Center bolt yes holds the tank and tank strap. The early years of the 3rd gen have less emmision devices on them. Have to watch those hoses and the plugs on the top of the tank. as I snapped a breather off the tank on my 2001 bringing it down. I got that fixed Moyer tank patched that tank up for me with lifetime warranty. Sent from my SM-J337V using Tapatalk
