I have seen a bunch of trucks SUV's in the ditch, rolled, and sliding all over hwy 26, going up the mountain, in the snow. I have never seen a Subaru, in the 12 years, that I have traveled this road.

I suspect that's driver error rather than the SUV or truck causing the accident. On hwy 2 up here, i saw first hand a legacy pass me on a ice covered road and by doing so lost control and slammed into a snow wall.

Common sense and good tires will save you regardless of what you drive.

I would have to agree with the original observation. Maybe not 90%, but one in three hatchbacks, at least.

The popular theme here is to add the ridiculously long rails and fit two Yakima Rocketboxes AND bike racks outfitted to the outside of each. They stick out so far that they would take your head off if you walk by them.

Oh, and the skis usually are transported on the inside along with all the other sh*t that's piled in them all year around.

:iagree: Couldn't have said it better myself! Experience and good M/S tires or better yet studds, will keep you "safer". But, you can never prepare for the other person who has no idea how to drive in snow but think they can!! You know who you are!

To be honest, I felt more confident in my 2 subarus (one Outback Sport, One WRX) in the winter than I do in my 4runner on regular roads. Of course both Subarus had dedicated (non-studded) snows and my Runner has Snowflake rated AS, but still...
I think the one thing that bugs me the most is the traction control kicking in and killing the truck when the center diff is not engaged. Of course I never really had any problem getting in or out of anywhere with the 4Runner, but there wasn't anything that my sister (OBS) or her boyfriend (Forrester XT) couldn't do that I could in VT when I was up there (their house is up a luge run of a driveway).
Just my $.02 and maybe I'll have more experiences this winter to add.
And P.S. Subaru is definitely the official car of VT too.

Whatever the merits of each, the Runner is better than the Forrester because I like Runners. Plus, the new Forester is ass-ugly.
