Didn't you know that Subaru is the official sponsors of the pacific northwest?!?! HAHA...It's the same here in Seattle with a few Audi's peppered in.
We took my friends new subaru impreza wagon up to vermont when they had 40" of fresh snow. I kept asking him if he thought it was the right car for such conditions.
It had studded tires on it and it was literally the best vehicle I've ever experienced in the snow. I was blown away by how unstoppable the subaru awd and studded tires were.
That being said, my 4runner with AT tires has never gotten stuck.

My best friend lives in Tahoe so I know what kind of year you've had, but please don't be ignorant.
it's apples and oranges. Subi's are great CARS. 4runner is on a TRUCK platform. I wouldn't go wheeling in a Subi, I wouldn't go bouncing down rutted, potholed dirt roads regularly either.
IMHO if you want to stay on pavement, have good clearance, and good mpg the Subi is hard to beat.
If you want to do any wheeling, towing, dirt road driving, great clearance, need a more comfortable passenger cabin for 4 adults and their gear the 4runner is the one to beat.

Same in Colorado 7 years ago when i visited...tons of Subi's!

The Subaru is obviously going to be better in the city, but when the heavy stuff starts coming down on the mountain I think your 4Runner is going to go a little farther.

I was just about to say you should see the parking lots at Mt. Hood, since everyone in Portland drives a Subi, then I saw where you were located...haha

Yup plenty of Subi's at the resorts too all season long. My other buddies have WRXes and STi's for that specific reason. Good car all around car all year long.
Haha, one day Thai, it'll be me up there too in a third gen Prius. Next year, maybe I can convince my friend we should go in her Prius rather than with my 4Runner.

If you didn't realize your 4runner was a 4WD truck, and if you won't be taking advantage of the added capabilities -- all of which have offsetting disadvantages -- it's possible a Suburu would have served you better.

I have seen a bunch of trucks SUV's in the ditch, rolled, and sliding all over hwy 26, going up the mountain, in the snow. I have never seen a Subaru, in the 12 years, that I have traveled this road. I really want a 4runner (over a Subaru), but also want the best vehicle to meet my needs of both a snowy world and a wet or dry, concrete world (that I put about 2000 miles a month on), and on some crater filled camping roads. I already know a Subara won't do the dirt back roads. I also cart alot around, for work, in my vehicles. Take dogs along, pick up stray dogs, etc. Starting to think I better keep the Mazda and get a 4runner.
