Seriously, make the drive through the Colorado National Monument, you can also drive most of the way to Rattlesnake Canyon in a subbie, just have to hike the last bit to the trail head.

The mosquitoes on Grand Mesa are insane; usually they're not bad in May, but they may be this year.

Did I say mosquitoes? I meant pterodactyls with spinal tap needles strapped to their heads. There's lots of great back country camping spots from Rabbit Valley west, in the book cliffs, or Delores Triangle. Depending on how far you want to go and what you are interested in, I can provide endless routes. You should stop at Hot Tomato though for sure.
