WFO9 Supercharger Install and results thread

How much does this thing affect gas mileage? I know people report the Tacoma one worked as a passive system and at just cruising there was no negative mpg changes seen.

Any thoughts on how this may impact towing? Previously i was hauling around about a 5500 lb boat/trailer (trailer had dual axles and really good brakes, but yes i know it was at limits). It got the job done, and the only hills to be concerned with were overpasses. Was thinking the increase in power may increase towing capability although I'd have to install airbags on the rear suspension. My concern is the increase in power up front, plus a potential increase in weight being pulled could result in a bad day for the transmission/drivetrain.

If I were to go with the supercharger route, even without towing duty, a transmission cooler seems mandatory in my mind.

I have not towed with it, so can't really say. I tow often, but have another truck for that, since the 4r is not a great towing platform for heavy loads.

I don't think it would increase the towing capacity. It would however increase the comfort and speed at which you could tow a light <=5k load. The trans could get hot depending on how often the converter is unlocked. So yea, a cooler would be needed for heavy loads. Overall, I just feel towing heavy loads with the 4r is not a great idea. It can do it in a pinch, but the supercharger is not going to make it tow 8k with ease.

To kinda piggy back off the above question... I am considering bumping up to Goodyear MTR 34's soon and was wondering if the supercharger and stock gearing would suffice. Or would you still do 4.56 gears?

Not to knock the S/C, but having gone from years in a RRS and a lot of high end 2 seaters. The real problem with the 4runner to me is not the power but the god awful 1990s 5 speed transmission.........I still have a 2015 full size RR Autobiography, and wifey has a 2016 Q7 with the 3.0 S/C....that little 3.0 absolutely screams....transmission is fantastic. Better than the 8speed in the RR....

That said, something I just really love about the 4runner.

I'd almost argue it could decrease the amount you could tow.
All that extra power going through the trans is a hard enough on it. Now add an additional 5000lbs behind it and now it's in full torture mode.

In my dodge diesel I can watch the trans Temps get higher when I tune it hotter, and they get even worse when towing. If I'm going to tow heavy I turn the tune down, not up.

Thought I would post an update since it has been a while.

I got the calibration updated to what is supposedly in the released kit. Anyway, WOW. It's very different.

I still need some time with it, but I think they addressed all my complaints and seemed to actually use my data as it appears to be spot on..

This could be the euphoria effect as it has to go through learn after a re-flash, but so far very good... even the shifts feel better. Lots more timing.. so much so that I'm a tad concerned but will know more with more seat time.

And I did verify it is making more power with data. Saw ~290 g/sec of air. Which is getting into 400 flywheel hp territory. It's also going into PE quicker and the dead spots seem to be gone. I'm impressed so far. Need more seat time, but I feel like I can now say it is what it should be... and this is coming from someone who has a lot of engine performance experience.

Hopefully, it will continue to please me and others who choose this option and I'm very happy we finally got to the point where 5th gen owners have the option to smile a bit more when pushing the go pedal.

It's not for everyone.. but for those that do feel the need. The option is there. And most importantly for me, I fee like I can continue to invest in building this rig into what I want. SAS feels almost worth it now, but I'm going to try the LT thing first and see if that satisfies me for a while.

Thanks for all this! I finally decided to put a down payment to get the 1st batch that should be coming out within a month or so.

Are you using Ultra gauge as your boost gauge as well? How’s the Mpg’s after the most recent update?

Thanks

No. I have a AEM failsafe widband which displays AFR and Boost. The Ultra gauge cannot display boost, but it can display your AFR via the factory WB (sort of). The failsafe is also a 2hr continuous loop high frequency data logger and I wanted that to help with the verification effort. I'm also able to wire it's output into my ODB analog data logger and software so I can correlate boost and true WB AFR with other readings... It also has a failsafe feature where you can trigger alarms/relay grounds... under different conditions (like AFR too high under X boost/RPM, but I have not come up with a way to use that yet on this platform)

I wish I had more data on the MPG. Just have not driven it much lately and when I do, I'm usually not being conservative at all. I was going to take it on a small trip last weekend, but ended up needing a pickup bed.

Hmmm, that's odd. You are in CA, right. I spoke to Magnuson weeks ago and they said:

  • They do not yet have CARB certification, not sure when they will
  • Are not taking deposits (at least from folks in CA)
  • Have a wait list and are selling in batches/production runs of 50
  • Will contact me as soon as CARB is done and my spot on the wait list is up

Nice. Thanks for the reply. I wanted a good AFR gauge so do you think a Ultra gauge would be suffice? It’s just for my DD.

I am looking into the failsafe but didn’t want to weld into my factory downpipe just yet or until I get an exhaust system.

I did mine through Vivid Racing. They just required downpayment to ensure myself in line since I’m in CA.

I agree. Now I wonder if one of the other Toyota transmissions would fit in the 4Runner? Anybody want to try that swap? I bet the 6 speed out of the GX would bolt right up.

Darn... your comment got me a little curious.. the chinese version of the GX (GX400) actually shares the 4.0 1gr-fe but also shares the same a750f 5 speed transmission. The 6 speed (A760F) has the same gear ratios from gears 1 to 5.

1 - 3.52
2 - 2.042
3 - 1.4
4 - 1.000
5 - .716
6 - .586
rev - 2.393
final drive - 3.909

Not a transmission expert by any means but I'm guessing that means our 1gr-fe wont have enough torque in 6 gear to do any good. It would have to shift to 5th gear more often anyway. Assuming the ECU(s) play nice between the engine and tranny. That's my guess.

The ultragauge is handy.. It's odbII and can display the standard lambda PIDs for a wideband. The only thing I found odd overall is that the ECU floors the lambda PID at .80 (which is about 12.0:1 AFR on a petrol motor). My AEM WB gives the full scale reading which is often lower than that in power enrichment. But for sanity purposes... it works as 12:1 is probably in the safe zone at these boost levels.

If you do get one.. update the refresh rate in one of the menus. By default it updates at a very slow interval.

Overall, I find it very useful and well worth the money.

The only benefit of of that trans would be that you could run better gearing in the diff and still not loose hwy efficiency. So 4.88 in the rear end....

Although the trans and gearing in stock form are partly to blame..It's a bit over stated IMHO. The motor itself is also calibrated in a very odd manner. I think the goal was economy and longevity, but it results in not so great economy and horrible drive-ability. Lots of torque management + a tendency to stay stuck in closed-loop + a lazy throttle mapping... There is a lot of room for improvement with just tuning. The motor can make some decent power in stock form, just in a very narrow band where it is allowed to do so.

I've heard the overseas LC models with the same motor actually run quite nice and have the ability to drop out of ECO mode. We have the eco light and eco calibration.. they have the same thing, but supposedly turning off the eco mode completely changes the calibration. Just what I have heard.. Can't verify.
