Whammy's '03 V8 Maintenance/Adventure Thread

As a few know, I will be acquiring an '03 V8 Sport from my father. The vehicle has roughly 116,000 mi and is in fantastic shape. I came from the jeep world owning both a Wrangler (TJ) and a Cherokee (XJ). After the XJ and losing cash on that vehicle, I am definitely wanting something else then a money pit.

As for the 4R, mine will not be a build/project. I'm done with that phase and want something for CO winters traveling through the mountains. My other car is an '03 BMW 330i (E46) 6-speed ZHP and cannot handle the winter. Next step is for me to get the 4R shipped out from WI to CO. My dad has done a great job at maintaining the vehicle and I am hoping to continue that.

If anyone has advice for me on what to read up on or to consider, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Looks awesome! Has it had the 100K timing belt/water pump maintenance? About the only thing I can think of other than check for frozen calipers...

Thanks! Haven't gotten it yet. My dad has not received his new car ('18 Outback). Probably getting it transferred close to the end of the month.

Looks awesome! Has it had the 100K timing belt/water pump maintenance? About the only thing I can think of other than check for frozen calipers...

It has. That was part of the last maintenance. It was done @ 60k & 116k. As for the calipers, they've frozen up three different times. When it happens again, I'm going to consider upgrading to the 5th gen calipers. Three times in under 120k is a bit ridiculous if you ask me.

Thanks! I would agree. I've been liking the outbacks as of late partially due to the space. However, I don't need a car here in CO. I need 4WD and my dad was looking to sell it.

His true test before deciding to purchase it was ensuring a 8-9ft fly rod fits. :lol:

Oh man they aren't a car 9 inches of ground clearance stock and one of the best AWD systems in the industry. Although it appears your dad likes to keep things stock, just in case you wanted to help get his gears turning a little.

Haha! That's unlikely. My dad's retired and getting close to 70. He's not a modder by any means.

However, that won't happen. Stock size/lift is fine for me. My XJ kind of ruined the whole "lift your vehicle" thing.

Just found out from my father he is getting his new outback at the end of the month. So, it is now time to start looking for shippers to ship it from WI to CO.

I have found someone who is willing to ship the vehicle for $500 + $50 broker fee. The person in question owns his own dealership and has shipped a lot of vehicles across the state. Is there anything I should be aware of when looking at getting the vehicle shipped?

As for brakes, I'm not sure. IIRC, the rear brakes for sports are 319mm while the fronts are 338mm. Is this correct? I'm thinking of getting Raybestos rotors. Pads probably Toyota OE unless there are better recommendations.

FYI, I took a coupon and 20% discount to Advanced Auto Parts and got new calipers, rotors and pads...just under $300 (fronts only) after I returned the cores. She brakes like a dream now!

Good to hear! I went through all of the receipts my dad gave me. Confirmed the right caliper was replaced twice with ~35,000 miles of each other (a couple years different). I'm a bit surprised it was changed so soon. Should it happen again I will be upgrading to 5th gen calipers though I don't know how different they are from the 4th gen sports (which I have).

In other news, three more days until I drive it back.

Today's the day! Picked up the truck and drove it all the day today to my halfway point (Omaha). So far no major issues though it looks like I need to replace the rims and the tires. All four rims are leaking a bit as I had to pump up all of the tires. Some were down as much as 20lbs. :wow:

I am thinking I might grab a local set of 5th gens when I get back to save on cost. Here's the rims (Photo Credit: E1mo1ovesyou)
