What constitutes a "build/mod" thread?

So I was sitting at the local tint shop today, and I was hastily creating a post for this forum on my Blackberry that excitedly discussed what was going on with my T4R.

Then it dawned on me...

...what if no one gives a crap about my mods?

Here's why I say that. I'm not nearly as skilled (or courageous) as Harper7, or Jesse 1983, or most of the other pioneers on here who have said "screw it, I'm installing/changing/modifying this thing!"

Almost every one of my "mods" will be something that someone else has already done on here (and likely done better). Hell, harper7 rebuilt a Limited into a full-time 4WD TE (with dual-zone climate control and leather, of course) and Jesse made his TE look like something Darth Vader would be proud to drive. :hatsoff:

The only semi-unique thing I'll do is to black out the chrome rocker and bumper strips with black vinyl instead of paint (done today while getting front windows tinted - less permanent than paint) and install color-matched door handles (like, oh, any Canadian model on this board). And I am looking to paint my chrome "wings" on the front grill and the rear garnish under the "4Runner" letters to be Salsa Red Pearl - not black.

The only thing I can offer is to show some of these mods on a Salsa Red Pearl 4Runner, since I don't see a lot of them in the mod threads.

So, I ask you, my fellow 5th gen 4Runner enthusiasts...

Should I/we leave the mod threads to the mechanically brilliant, and just try to quietly keep up (after those guys post LOTS of pictures to show us how to do stuff! LOL)?

nah, i think it's cool man. All of the people and their trucks are unique, even if we borrow the ideas from each other. I'm taking ideas from different people and trying to mix my own package. It's still interesting in seeing the different things people do to their trucks, we all have one thing in common: we own a 4runner. Who cares if it is a SR5 or a Trail. Who cares if i don't throw the biggest lift and the biggest wheels on it. I don't plan on taking my truck as off road as other people, but, it's still interesting to see what some guys will do with their trucks! Thats my .02!

I'll be looking forward to seeing your truck pics before and after the mods. It's like telling a story.

It might give others ideas (even the big guns of modding) and...

Someone might spot a possible issue with the mod that needs to be corrected, saving big $$$ down the road (that's one of the reason's for this forum).

These are the two main reasons I'm here, getting ideas and to protect me from myself.

I probably check out every build thread, and even in the "standard" build/mod threads, I usually find something to appreciate or something a bit different that gives extra perspective/ideas.

In fact, I think I may have an interesting way to do this thread that may help (hopefully encourage some other posters on here who may - like me - be a little intimidated by some of these projects, or hesitant to modify a brand new, perfectly good truck. (as my gorgeous, wonderful wife would say: "if your idea was so great, it would have come from the factory that way!")

Start a build thread sp8ball!! I'll be checking it out.Everybody has to start and learn somewhere. You already have alot of interesting ideas we would love to see. If you need help ,there are always people on here willing to pitch in.

To me, a build thread is about the evolution and progression of your truck that you want to share, just because. It's not about what you can do to your truck.

I've also seen your ideas in another thread and thought they were very cool and unique. Let's see them! :thumb3:

i agree, start your thread.

Mod/build threads are good for a bunch of reasons. they keep all your info organized, and in a timeline. that makes reading it easy for others, and takes you on a trip down memory lane in a few years when you look back on it. Also, it keeps the forum nice and clean. Having your own thread is a million times better than creating a new thread once a week to show the little thing you did.

In the "Modifications, Write-ups, and Quick Links" thread that's "stickied" at the top of the forum, Harper posted a 2010 Toyota Parts Manual.

Check out pages 123-125 and 132-134.

Then you load those numbers into ToyotaPartSales.com, and get them at a better price than what's listed on the manual.

But mikey's question brings to bear something important and interesting that I'm going to incorporate into my build thread. For every project - no matter how small - I'll come up with a little narrative that will:
- post pictures
- include links to other threads in this forum that either inspired me, had cool pictures of the mod on other T4Rs, or taught me how to do it
- include any part numbers (and how I got those part numbers so others can verify for themselves)
- discuss any pros/cons I encountered before, during, or after the mod
- cap it off with vendor information (website, prices, etc).

I'll launch this thread later today! I'm excited!

Definitely start one! I think it'd be not only cool - but beneficial since not everyone has the same skill set/level or creative juices as Harper, Jesse, etc.
