What did you do to/in your 5th Gen today?!

Heard the fateful sound of my windshield cracking on the way to work the other day. Sure enough, the weather (freezing fog/mist) coupled with the defroster on full and windshield wipers, I ended up with a crack running about 3/4 across the bottom length of the windshield. :mad2: At least all but about 8 inches is in the black boarder of the windshield, so is not too noticeable.

Tapped threaded holes into the crash bar...

Did you get a feeling for how thick the material might be? Just wondering about how many threads a 1/4" NF tapped hole might have in it. Thanks.

My guess is about 4.5 threads in the hole (as my bolt was 18 tpi). I was skeptical but they seem to hold quite firm. I reefed on each bolt and it passed the test. Saved me using U-bolts or drilling straight through.

Thanks for your reply. The only 18 tpi threads I can find referenced anywhere are 5/16 NC, 9/16 NF, and 5/8 NF. I assume you tapped it 5/16 NC - 9/16 NF and 5/8 NF being sort of on the big side. Is this a good assumption? Anyone have any ideas about the front, rear, and bottom surfaces? And does it feel like regular old soft aluminum or more like a hard alloy of some sort?

Nevertheless, don't complain too much. I'd rather suffer two windshield replacements a year and live in CO than rural NYS and have none at all!

Is glass coverage mandatory in CO?

Good point, no complaining allowed I guess. Some type of coverage is on every policy but there seems to be variations from one company to the next. They all cover chips and small cracks, most cover a new windshield but a friend was telling me his company only covered the new windshield if it obstructs view.

So I guess when he gets a crack he probably would "help" it along.

Drove 250 miles round trip up to our lake house to get my tandem axle trailer that we use to haul the mule on. Truck pulled it like a champ in 4th gear but only averaged 12 mpg towing it back.

Bummer, saw that traffic and went hiking in the front range. Look for me at copper every weekend in Feb as ill be there.

Traffic was just insane and we thought we were getting an early start before 6:00 AM.
