Took it out and did what it was made for
150513 – The Corral – 4R Trek 274
Just had to go play in the dirt for a bit; get the tires dirty; exercise the four wheel drive; enjoy the sunshine and wind…. Where to go? Not too far. Just a couple hours. Ahaa! Let’s give trying to get to that old corral out on the Fernley Sink that it has always been too treacherous to reach.
For the past ten years I’ve thought about going there but it’s out about three miles through blown sand and silt; the water table high enough that as soon as you break through a 1 inch crust you hit muck that is probably forty feet deep. With the past four years of drought maybe I can get there this time. I had better do it today because we’re forecast a chance of rain showers for the next six days.
So I top up the tank at Fox Peak (Paiute Tribal owned) and head down the road five miles to the turn to Black Butte (The Dragon). I run down the graded road used by the geothermal energy people until I get to that rocky trail that Ben and I crossed the saddle on about eight years ago. It’s 4LO and 1st gear crawling down the big rocks towards the Sink. I even used the downhill assist to keep the speed almost zero.
I turn north when I got to the silt/sand flat and kept getting out and checking how soft it was by walking on it. I figured as long as my shoes never sank below about 4 inches the truck would be OK. Turning east where a couple tire tracks seemed to be going towards the corral site I continued on. Seemed a bit soft but I kept it going about 5 miles an hour and eventually got to the corral. I didn’t stop on the mushy parts for pictures – Cautious!
The corral really exists! The Toyo Open Country MTs in E rating certainly do their job well in basalt rocks and alkali sand/silt.

Welded in my shackle mounts and capped the end 'wings' on my front bumper. Soon to be primed and ready for a weekend of trails - then next week, cleanup and powdercoat.
Hopefully getting around to installing my 2-way radio as well.

Spent way too much time trying to order 4 diff gaskets today. Toyota dealers had them for $4 but wanted $17 shipping. Amazon had them from Daytona Toyota with free shipping but $20 for the parts. Autozone, Pep Boys and other shops did not have them.
Finally found them for $4 for parts and $4 shipping from https://www.toyotapart.com/SFNT.html
They had the full range of shipping choices with good pricing from US mail to overnight/next day.
I think changing the diff oil will be easier than getting the gaskets.
