Made a fork mount inside the 4runner for my road bike.
I attempted that, as well, but my saddle height is too much. It'd fit if the 2nd row seats wouldn't come up an inch-ish.

Pretty tall? I just have to angle it when going in but it sits straight up once it passes the opening in the trunk.
Nice! I had one in my Xterra that fit two bikes, can't remember the company that made it. Haven't been able to find one for the 4Runner. How difficult was it to make?

Buy 1 or 2 of these ( http://www.amazon.com/Sunlite-Bike-...id=1447184583&sr=8-1&keywords=bike+fork+mount ), drill it into some wood, and wrap it in some grey automotive carpet to make it look nice. Done.
Not permanently mounted in the back so I put it back into the garage after I'm done using it.
no, just long legs. 78cm saddle height from center of BB. one bike has a post i could drop, but the other has an ISP, so that's not gonna go anywhere. It'll fit if I put the fork in first, by about 10mm, but that'd require some riggery.
Damn! Simple, but just as good as the one I paid $100+ for years ago. Thanks for the idea and info!
NCBoxer sums it up pretty well. It does mess with the auto windows though. The instructions say to leave the windows up for 12 hours to let everything seat in. I found that I still have to deal with it. It's sort of annoying but it should work itself out.
In terms of wind noise, it has been below freezing here so I haven't been able to put some mileage on with the windows open.

Thanks Danny, glad I could help install the suspension. We had a few out of the ordinary issues pop up. But made it interesting and we got er' done. Looks good!

I have no idea. I've struck rocks before on the skid plate but I didn't think that would misalign the hood.
I believe there are some trails in there after seeing a youtube video of a Jeep Jamboree within the canyon.
I have to also add, during an evening when we headed into town for supplies I spotted a blacked out 5th gen with this setup entering the camp grounds.
