What did you do to/in your 5th Gen today?!

Went to explore some Forest Service Roads in the Olympic National Forest. Definitely should not have gone out there solo and should have thought to read road conditions as it became apparent after a while that the roads I was driving on were not traversed by anyone else in a good while. There were multiple rock slides but they looked like they had been taken care of and were passable (weren't covering the road, just a few large rocks that you had to go around) but holy shit the overgrowth and brush absolutely murdered my paint job. Hopefully I'll be able to get out the majority of them with cutting and buffing, but there may be some that are permanent.

I will say this, the 4Runner is definitely capable in stock form. I know most hardcore enthusiasts would scoff at Forest Service Roads but some of the sharp rocks and debris fields reeeeally made me paranoid driving over with the stock dunlops - but they made it through!

I definitely had my ass puckered for a good hour or so driving across previous rockslides (again, they seemed to have been maintained, just a few large rocks I had to drive around) next to 3200 feet elevation mountain sides. I was really worried about puncturing a tire and getting stuck out there without any roaming cell coverage or anything. Definitely feel like a dumbass.

I eventually got to the main gravel road and headed the direction I planned to go only to turn a corner and see a rockslide that literally covered the road and would be hard to traverse even by foot. So I turned around and went the opposite direction on the road and luckily it was passable. I was panicking for a while.

This was my first real "off road" trip and I definitely should not have been doing it alone. Spent about three hours on-trail. In the grand scheme, unless I got killed by a rockslide, it probably wouldn't have been a big deal. My biggest concern was puncturing a tire and having to swap it out with an unstable cliff face up and to my right and a 1000+ foot drop off to my left.

Lesson learned: if the brush is blatantly overgrown, turn the **** around (well, maybe some of y'all could deal with it, but I need to turn around lol). Too bad I don't have any friends up in this part of the country to go with me, otherwise it would have been a little less stressful.

So yeah, I'm an idiot. But I'm alive so, yay?

On the bright side, there was a gravel pit at the beginning that allowed me to test all the off-road features of the 4Runner. This thing really is pretty capable in stock form. A little extra height on the front end, some rock sliders and underbody protection and some better tires and I can't imagine people really need much more except for extreme situations. I also got to test the crawl control on a beach where the truck seemed to be having some trouble and it took pretty good care of it. Really impressed!

And got some decent photos! (none of the really sketchy parts that I drove on since I was too panicky to even consider stepping out of the truck to take pictures)

Posing like a total bro!

Any details on where you were?

Good pics regardless, and always good to take a stock vehicle out to know what it is capable of.

NF2918 to 2931 to 2920 to 29.

After looking online, apparently 2931 is closed past MP5 (not sure why, 2931 was pretty easily traverse-able) and 2920 is closed due to rock slides (says since 2015, so not sure how up-to-date it is) but like I said, I drove on 2920 and although it was sketchy and the overgrowth was horrendous, it was still traverse-able - the roads weren't knocked out, they were just kind of covered in mostly small rock debris with a few larger chunks laying about. 29 towards Forks was the road that had the REAL BAD rock slide that covered the road. So had to turn around and take it the opposite direction back up to 101.

And yes, putting the vehicle through it's paces gives you a pretty swift idea of what your and the vehicle's limits are. Would have been way more comfortable with some thicker tread though!

Thanks for the props on the dogs.
brtnstrns, where is the beach pic???

got my windows tinted yesterday too, 5 on fronts and back and 15 on rear sides.

See anything interesting in the background?

Got some tint done today. Still researching a lift, but all the talk about the KDSS lean has me struggling to make a solid decision.

Not all today...but over last week these are my completed projects.

Installed a Speed Demon Infinity 30" light bar (27600 lumens) - the bar is duel switched so I can control the center 3 lights separate from the outside 2 lights. And you customize the lenses for your preferred setup ( spot, flood, amber).
I went with 2 outside as spot, and center 3- flood, spot, flood).

Mounted on a Rago fabrication hidden mount behind the grill.
Pic shows lights off, outside spots on, center on, all on.

Switches are AOB switches.

Installed an Air on board rear diff. And elocker breather kit.... went well except first fitting broke off flush in my diff. Got it out and fixed up. Ran it under the hood. (No pics)

Painted roof rails black.

Installed TRD pro grill.

Sooo much more I want to do!!

Found some tree carvings from the 20's

Our roads are still seriously phucked up from the winter. I'm afraid we may have lost some routes. Found several yard sales where people got stuck and left crap behind. And a crazy mulie.

Brought her home from the car hospital

After a long 3 months, I got to bring her home from the hospital. She had some significant hail damage. The first shop did not do a good job on the repair so, they moved it to a different shop (same chain). It actually felt strange to drive it.

They still need to do some minor fixes but, I got to take her home.

jrandom, thanks and ya, can't see shit out at night but its awesome during the sunny days, i need heat reduction and privacy for my dogs. Visors are AVS from amazon, about $60. IMHO best ones on the market as far as style and performance.
