What did you do to/in your 5th Gen today?!

I’m not Japanese, but I have worded in a manufacturing industry. Based on my experience, people tend to sign parts like this to make a mark, especially on a Friday or their last day on the job. Based on this, I believe that will roughly translate to, “eat a di@k”. But, I could be totally wrong...

Since the like button is broken, AGAIN, LIIIIIIIIIIIIKE!

Hit up LBL in Kentucky this weekend. I think we had 12 rigs total in our group. Here's a few shots from our trip:

And one to prove we weren't just there for the poser shots:

...My Latest Adventure & Misadventure...

...Howdy!...:cowboy:

...Here is SW Montana, we have had a string of overcast, snowy days that had highs of 1 degree above zero...Now, this is not a complaint...I mean, come on, it's Montana in the winter, right?....

...But, that is typically not the best weather for Nature-Photography....so, when a few days ago the forecast was for bright-n-sunny, and a high of 18 degrees...I packed up my gear and went out to see what I could find....
...Quite often, when I go out with no clear objective, I often find pleasant surprises..and this trip was no disappointment....

...I drove south down the main road, and cut off on a dirt road I went down back in the summer, which leads to several ranches and camping areas beyond...The road was obviously snow-covered, but nicely plowed...so I was making slow progress just looking...until I found a young, very healthy bull moose eating willow-sprouts on the opposite side of a frozen stream...

...I jumped out and started taking pics and video...and he seemed only mildly interested in my presence...so we hung out together for about 30 minutes....After getting all the stuff I wanted...I drove farther down the road, just in case I found another treasure....but it was late afternoon...so I decided it was time to start heading home...And this is the part of the story that turns into a misadventure....:scared:

...I got to a trailhead parking area, and decided to back into it so I could turn around and head back home....but miscalculated the entrance...and backed into the ditch instead...At first, I didn't realize this, and only thought I was in a snow drift, so got out my shovel and cleared the snow away from the rear tires...which were only spinning when I tried to pull out...

...the snow that was filling this ditch was from snow-plows, and it was packed as hard as styrofoam, so came out in huge chunks...but still no traction...so I dug some more out...and tried again....but...no-go!...So, I tried all the nifty gadgets we have in the 4runner....diff-lock, crawl-control, low-4, etc...but still, NOT a budge?...:noidea:

...I got out and started clearing more snow away...and it was then that I realized the truck was suspended by the hard snowpack, and I was in a ditch...and the rear wheels had no traction cos they weren't even touching the ground!...Well, DAMN!...:dammit:

...So, I spent the next 45 minutes clearing as much snow from UNDER the truck as possible all the way around...and I was gettin mildly desperate...as the sun had gone behind the mountains about 25 minutes earlier..and the temps dropped 15 degrees while I was there trying to extricate myself from my predicament....But, Still....NO movement!...:redbrick:

...It was at this point that I pulled out my last best option, which was my X-Bull traction boards..jammed them in front of the rear tires...and the truck pulled out like it was on dry pavement!....YIPPEE!...:guitar3:

...That was the point where I could now see just how deeply I was buried...:jaw:

...Now...if this last effort had failed....I still could have walked 1/4-mile either way to one of the ranches, and got help pulling me out....but that was a Last-Ditch-option for me...for two reasons:

...First, obviously...I was driving the most reliable and capable offroad vehicle on the market today..so asking for help would be rather humiliating.....
...( after all, it wasn't a failure of the truck...but simple pilot-error! )...

...But, secondly...asking for help would have been a failure on my part to pass my first self-sufficiency test out in the wild...and THAT would have been really hard to live with going forward...:redbrick:

...So, I learned a valuable lesson about getting myself out of a situation I got myself into..( in the first place )...and increased my confidence in myself and my equipment...and finally, reconfirmed my belief that I bought the best vehicle for the job!....So, Win-Win!...:thumb3:

...Thanks for reading so far..:thanks:...and now some pics below of the day...Cheers!...

Beautiful pictures! Can't believe you haven't swapped out those tires with that kind of snow though lol

Added TRD Wheels and lower valences to SR5

Day 8 of ownership. Got a 15% discount at the dealer for the TRD black wheels, they did the install/ balance/ sensors for free. I got lucky.:bluejump:
The lower valances arrived yesterday so I installed those today. Fun little project cutting 27 slots into brand new bumpers.

Well sad day for me. Driving at night and my new HID xDDepot bulbs fall upon a large dog in the middle of the road. Going 70, prolly down to 60mph by the time I hit it. Super sad. I went back and she had died. No chance to survive that. Had a collar but no tags and was probably 2-3 miles from closest house.

Anyway, front bumper sustained some damage.

...Thanks for the kind words about the pics!.....

...But, as for the snow...it really has not been all that bad so far this winter?...

...I had planned on gettin snow-tires back in October....but since then the most we have had at one time is 5-6 inches...most of the time only 2-4 inches....

...Frankly, I have been pleasantly surprised at how well the stock tires deal with the snow so far...and really doubt if snow-tires or more aggressive tires would have been much help with the situation I got myself into there?....I dug down below the rear tires by several inches...and Never got to any dirt....so no idea how much farther down any dirt to grip on could have been?...

...Like I said in the original message....it was only the X-Bull traction-boards that saved my butt!...:bravo:

...I really have no serious interest in larger tires or a lift, as I don't intend to do any real serious offroading....as I carry too much delicate camera-gear with me much of the time...

...However....if we get dumped on by a lot more snow each time, then I would certainly consider more aggressive tires....

...( It has been 39 years since I lived in a real winter climate, but was born and raised in Chicago...so severe winter driving conditions are not new to me...and I am enjoying the white stuff again!...Besides, once the snow fell thru the filthy atmosphere above Chicago...it was more like a dirty grey by the time it hit the ground!...LOL!...)...:barf:

...Having said all that....I have found a strange phenomenon here?...I live 10 miles outside Bozeman in a very rural area, but just off a major artery..so the big trucks keep the roads fairly clear out here...but the closer ya drive into the center of town, the more treacherous drivin becomes...and the more snow and ice is on all the roads?...

...I finally realized that there is far more constant traffic 'IN' town, so as it snows, cars compress the snow on the streets before the snow-plows can remove it...so it builds up and makes the roads there a lot more....slickery?!

Great story, and awesome pics!

...Muchos Thanks, Ray!...

...When ya gonna get out there and produce some more of those really interesting videos about mines and ghost-towns?.....and when ya gonna start using your drone to film some of it again?.....I really enjoy your stuff!...:thumb3:

I have a friend at the dealership, typically I would benefit from her employee discount on parts and accessories but TRD is off limits for employee pricing. She was able to talk the manager into a customer appreciation 15% discount since I just bought the 4Runner last Saturday. The install was a unexpected bonus!

...Please see post 36864 for my thoughts on the tires...

...but since ya mentioned it......how do you know?...:snacker:

A few seasons ago it was unusually low tide at Mammoth in March. We decided to go look for snow for the dog to play in, so we headed up a shelf road above Convict Lake, Tobacco Flats area. I had driven in the snow a few times before this so my confidence level was higher than it should have been. I also had no recovery gear like an idiot.

When it came time to traverse this little snowpack, I just pushed right through. Until I stopped... And couldn't go forward. Couldn't go backward. Spent time digging out and trying to get out of it. All of my motion was being wasted slowly crabbing off to the side, until my driver tires were basically hanging off and headed towards an imminent rollover.

We threw in the towel and hiked back down to the 395 (a very nice couple who parked further down offered us a lift partway). Spent an hour trying to find a tow company who would recover us on a Sunday, and finally got ahold of Bill's Towing in Bishop (a town 40 miles south).

After a few hours, Bill and his son arrived in his FJ and we finally returned to the truck. He yanked me square back onto the trail and out of the snow. We had to drive backwards on the shelf until the next switchback to turn around.

The total time for his cost and recovery would have nicely paid for a set of all-terrains, but it was still cheaper than rolling the truck over. :wof: I ended up buying a set of +1 KO2s and they were great (I have the same on the Runner now). Sturdy, quiet, great in just about anything but clay mud, snow/peak symbol rating, and minimal penalty in daily mileage.

No doubt traction boards would have also been a great help, but tires really make the truck. You don't have to get a lift or bigger ones to enjoy the benefits. Beautiful pictures by the way, and glad you were able to self-recover!
