I tried to drive from Saline Valley Road in Death Valley to the the Racetrack Playa via Lippincott Mine Road. I had heard that there was a certain "A** Pucker factor" to the road, but man o man, I'm still puckered. There are wash outs along the cliff face that would have turned me around but the prospect of backing up was impossibly frightening, so forward we go! Let's just say that there were tires that were half on and half off the road. I have never been so glad to be at the end of a trail, then I was met with a bone stock F150, with street tires blocking the pass. 2 tires were blown the spare was on and the rest had blisters on the side wall. It looked like this guy had the worse day ever and then broke an axel 3/4 of a mile from the end of the trail. So I had to back down, find a spot to turn around and do the hole thing over again . Turns out there was a sign on the Racetrack side of the trail, the Ford had been there for a week! 3 hours of back track and I made it to the Racetrack side of the pass.

Wow! I've been planning a DV trip that involved the racetrack and exiting via Cerro Gordo. I've heard that Lippincott can be a real bear, would you not recommend it in its current condition? Hope they can pull that truck out, though I know the recovery cost will be astronomical. Poor dude. Did you re-route via Hunter and then around to Teakettle?

Same here! Where did you go specifically? The trail we took was off Granny Gap 1 Road and 1322 by Mill Creek and we did ours on October 13 I believe. We were supposed to somehow take a trail all the way connecting to Byrd's Adventure Park (we were told about a trail) but we were so late in the day and had to leave the next morning, we jumped on the highway and camped at Byrd's.
It was our first time in Arkansas and it was super fun.

We didn't have too many challenging stuff like yours other than water crossings and inclines with some puddles (though there was one deep crossing that me and the landcruiser took and everyone opted out of. It reached up to my headlight and rear license plate at some point lol), but it was a blast and nice seeing different scenery compared to Houston. Was hoping to see more Fall colors.
We want to go back and finish whatever trail we were told about at some point. It's amazing how you can just go in there and boom, trails. In Houston all private lands and such.

The bottom up towards the end of the purple is all we were able to do and that took 2 hours as well.

We ended the trail on Morgan Mountain Road. The Forest Service road we exited on had a barrier up like it was closed. The path went right next to that barrier.

Came into the trail off of 23. I really need to get a Mapping App on my phone. GPS on the truck just had us off all marked roads altogether.

Figured we'd eventually hit something on car GPS.

started the rust fight , primed painted whole frame , then fluid filmed everything and sprayed inside of frame with bar oil and atf mixture

I just finished plastdipping all of the chrome the front grill and the front bumper trim. Last week I plasti-dipped the side trim, the rear trim and the rear emblem. Now I need to figure out what I'm going to do with the roof rack chrome. I also designed/applied mountain decals for the back window and the side windows this past weekend. Later today I will be installing my Westin Bull Bar. Next up: Stepping bars & black wheels!

Nice camping setup. Can you provide more info on the tent system?
It looks like there’s a couple of galvanized storage cans in the tent corner. For dog food storage?

I saw that same truck on Saturday. Its a 2wd rental truck. All 4 tires on the ground had air when I saw it. Looked like someone had kicked in the grill a few times.
FYI, if you go back there most people go from Playa down to Saline Valley road. Not a set rule or a 1 way road but just relaying what is customary

Tent is a Napier 82000, I found mine on Ebay new in the box for $180 but that was over a year ago. Those storage cans were just for firewood, I put it under the rainfly to keep the frost off of it. I put an air mattress in the 4Runner and use the tent as a porch/kitchen/hang out area when the weather is nasty.

If anyone wants more pics or info just let me know, I can get pics of my setup this weekend. I'm always looking for an excuse haha

I went to the dealership yesterday to get my 5,000 mile service done. Since we purchased a travel trailer a few months ago, I had been considering moving to a pickup truck to make the trailering a little bit more comfortable/confidence inspiring. Even though the trailer is well within the towing capacity of the 4Runner, there are times where I feel like it'd be nice to not have such a short wheelbase.

Anyway, while I was at the dealership I went and checked out the Tacomas. Didn't test drive them or anything, just sat in them and checked them out.

Wow! They have a lot of nice features and bells and whistles, but the quality of the interior is noticeably worse than the 4Runner. I mean, the 4Runner is no luxury vehicle, but all the buttons and knobs and steering wheel feel solid and high quality and have some weight behind them. The Tacoma is super plasticky and cheap feeling.

I had read a few complaints on the forums about them feeling cheaper, but I just didn't expect it to be that noticeable.

I really hope the next generation 4Runner continues to be manufactured in Japan because those built-in-Mexico Tacoma interiors just aren't up to snuff. I didn't even have the desire to see if all the drivetrain complaints are well-founded because I feel like the material quality was enough of a turn-off to not even consider it as an option. It sucks since it really is such a nice looking mid sized pickup.
