Opening up the oem headlights are such a pain. That permaseal is really on there good. Maybe try modifying the ebay halogen projector housing (where the mounting points are) to fit the mled projector. There's a thread on a guy modifying the stock halogen projector mounting points and adapting it to gs350 projectors so they mount in the stock location. If you find the thread you'll know what I'm talking about. Just an idea.

All this work to modify the headlights. The H9 bulb swap works so well that I don't understand it. I guess people enjoy doing all of that and that's fine, if you enjoy it go for it. But all the time, work and money and from what I've seen the rewards aren't that much better and a lot of these mods wind up blinding other drivers. Different strokes, I guess. Maybe I'm just lazy, old and cheap lol!

He cut up the stock projectors and mounted his projectors to those, not a bad solution

They were a set of eagle eyes. I used the TRS seal splitter to separate the lens from the housing and it worked awesome. Hoping it helps a bit with the permaseal.

I blacked out the grill of my 2020 T4R using Plasti-Dip on the lower valance and chrome trim on either side of the Toyota logo.

Next up: just about every other mod you can think of.

you're wrong. quality projector with a quality HID is 10x better than your OEM drop in halogen bulb from the 90's.

but if you've never done an actual retrofit i get that you wouldn't notice the difference, and yea its a pain in the absolute asz..

if we're talking about dumb mods can we talk about "raptor lights":reddance:

Yes you're right, I have not spent hundreds of dollars and hours of time on headlights that I am sure are brighter, have better color etc. but 10X better? Somehow I doubt that and you still blind other drivers unless you take the time to realign them which from what I've seen most don't bother to do. Look I'm not knocking those who choose to go this rout. It works for you, go for it I said that in my original post. To me it's a point of diminishing returns kind of thing.

All I can say is drive an Audi built after 2005 with bi-Xenon headlights and then drive your 2019 4R and try to rationalize why the headlight output of a vehicle 15 years older far exceeds yours, and yes the Audi will likely be at least 10x better.
Someone who goes through the trouble of properly building a set of OEM+ projectors with the correct bulb is going to aim them correctly, too. We aren't talking about dropping HIDs into a halogen projector. This is a true, custom, built for purpose retrofit.
The beauty of these forums is that people want different things from their vehicle, but we are all here to share modifications. My 4R will never see the desert or west coast rock parks, so I don't need the armor or lift. I prefer the comforts of a hotel, so I won't have an RTT or even an attached canopy. I'm used to having headlights from a European vehicle, so I'll invest in that. I'll take my $500 retrofit over a $1300 roof rack any day, because I use my lights every day.

Platform Build

I built this platform for the back of my 2019 4R. I coated it with Rustoleum bedliner. I had a can of the spray type which I used first to coat the L-track channels and bolt recesses, and then used the roll-on type to put two coats over the whole platform. I kinda wish now that I had just used the aerosol type on the whole thing. I found that when using the roll-on, it was difficult to get a uniform sheen on the coating. The roll-on is tough as nails and probably(?) more durable than the aerosol. Not to worried about the looks though since it will just get scuffed up over time anyway.
I added two pullout shelves underneath coated with polyurethane satin varnish.
I used 3/4 inch baltic birch plywood for the platform and 1/2 inch baltic birch for the pullout shelves.
Will use the tiedowns for my Jackery 500 generator which I just got, as well as the Goal Zero Boulder 100 Suitcase solar panel (coming Monday), and plan on purchasing a Dometic CFX3 35 Fridge ASAP.
I will probably build my own slider for the fridge unless I determine that it would be as cost effective to just buy one.

Yep this is correct. A proper retrofit is entirely different from the cheapo drop-in HID and LED bulbs.

Although I will agree that the H9 or H11+ bulb is the only worthwhile upgrade when staying with the original halogen projectors. I went through the "upgraded LED" phase and now I'm back to proper halogens (H9 and 9011).

H9 retrofit in the OEM projector is SIGNIFICANT Try it, it's literally the best $14 you can spend on a mod. I was considering HID since I am not a fan of LED at all but after this I am 100% happy. It's literally like driving a different vehicle. I bought a 2nd set of the Philips H9 bulbs to swap out the OEM H9 high beam bulbs and even that as a direct swap is a big upgrade. I know the OEM projector is far from top quality but I think the horrible OEM bulb is more of a problem than the projector itself.
