What did you do to/in your 5th Gen today?!

Hi everyone, just a heads up, I found a 20% discount on rhino rack products for Prime Day. Was able to snag the 76" x 48" platform, the Backbone 3 base mounting system and the full rail kit for $1,100.05 with free delivery to Puerto Rico. I looks like the filter did it’s job. You have the good middle eastern version with that meshy sand/grit pre-filter. How did the other side look, any dirt get by to the engine?

I used a K&N filter for a while but got tired of washing, drying, oiling. Too much of a PIA for me and I went back to the OEM filter. Plus I read a few reviews that said the paper OEM ones filter better than the high air flow after market filters.

The filter definitely did its job! It looked good and filter stopped the dirt.

I heard the oiled filters are no go for off-roading, so I went with the washable dry filter. I hope that filters just a good as the stock filter. I guess time with tell.

Back in a 4Runner after 28 year absence (10 years Pathfinders, 18 Jeep Wranglers).

Purchased mid August, lift/tires/wheels mid September, Sliders/skids after Colorado trip.

Expected it to be more comfortable (IFS/longer wheelbase) and more creature comforts, didn't expect it to do as well as it did offroad. Only complaint is how vulnerable the oil/transmission pans are/gas tank is (Jeep does better job tucking up in frame rails). Call to RCI with a credit card and all is well.

It's good to be back.

Touch up paint on my front bumper gone wrong lol... Its been neglected for a while and had a bunch of rock chips. Removed it today to likely get fully repainted. Anyone got ideas other than just repainting, or something to do while the bumper is off? I do not need a steel bumper right now and would prefer to keep the OG trail look. Considering applying truck bed liner myself on the entire front bumper, rear bumper, and trim all around.

Love your truck! It is one of the reasons I was considering it. Will likely go this route after thinking about it some more tonight. Did you do this yourself or go to a shop? If done yourself which kit did you go with?

Did mine diy. 80 grit sandpaper. Acetone. Spray in liner of your choice. I used Dupli color bed armor.

As you can see it get's pretty dirty due to it's porous finish. Nothing a power washer or at worst a scrub with citrus degreaser cant solve. I wipe it all down with 303 to keep it looking new. Some of the panels like my hood where painted two years ago and are holding up to the arizona sun.

That being said I'm tempted to try out raptor liner. Seems to be a glossier finish and might be easier upkeep (not that it's hard now).

Thanks for the info! The raptor kit was what I was looking at. Comes with a spray gun which would help out a lot. Pulling the trigger tonight and can let you know how it turns out when finished.

What I did:

Last week but, finally had all the parts in to put my fire extinguisher quick release together. Did some wheeling and camping this weekend to test.

Observations:

No rattling I can hear. Did have to drill the Molle out, on the seat mount, to fit the bolts I got at ace for the QR mech. I would like to put a foam pad on the underside of the extinguisher to act like a bump stop (if I really bounce the truck). I’m 6’5” and I seem to kick it lightly here and there getting in (as you can see). I have yet to try trimming the plastic bolt covers to fit. Floor mat needed to be cut to fit.

Desert does it seat mount.

Drake off-road quick release mechanism.

H3R extinguisher because looking cool is important.


Would I recommend this mod?

If you let kids/dogs climb in the front seat prob not.

If you have full skid plates which now seal in parts of the exhaust. Anything could get caught up there and burn. Especially if you wheel.

I value not burning alive or watching someone do so. You could save someone’s life or vehicle.

Forest fires = very bad.

I do have concerns about its ability to crush my feet in an accident. But, if I was that concerned I would not have done a body mount chop either.

It’s definitely safer then mounting it on a 3rd row molle panel where it could become a missile.

If I had the tools I would make it mount closer to the seat. This was a low effort route.

Got my Victory 4x4 molle panels today. Put a D cell Maglite mount on passenger side and a Uniden CB on the driver side. Just waiting for my Rago antenna mount and I’ll wire in the CB.

Mounted a Overland Vehicle Systems nomadic 3 extended to my greenlane rack last night.

All in all. Pretty nice tent, love the size of it and price obviously. A little iffy on the ‘extension’ around the ladder. You’ve got the 1/2” aluminum tube that you just kind of wedge in place. Doesn’t seem like it would stay in place with a good wind

Headlight Haze

I removed 9 years of haze on upper surfaces of the headlights using polishing compound. Arizona sunshine is intense. The critical vertical surface which light shines through was mostly clear. Now all of it is clear.

Super clear and concise, mostly mechanically overview video of the 4R. Maybe worth a sticky? or can moved to appropriate thread? if not already posted somewhere.

I'm sure the experts already know all this info but for the nubies, intermediates I think it's great information for a basic understanding of your vehicle.
