What did you do to/in your 5th Gen today?!

Finally installed the Avid Offroad rock sliders.
Flat (0° angle), kick out, top plate.
Ten bolts each side, very stout. Didn't have to remove any brackets to install (no KDSS). Just the Nfab nerf/steps.
Spent weeks painting them. Now to go scratch them up.

How old is your 4R? Do you have two keys? Do you use only one key?
On my older 4Runner I used one key exclusively and kept the other in reserve. Well, that key and the ignition must have worn in sync over the years. I rarely used a key in the door locks, and eventually the well-used key would not work in the doors. However the unused spare would, but would be kind of sticky in the ignition.

So in my 5th Gen I’ve been swapping the keys every 6 months so they wear kind of evenly.

2014 and it’s new to me. According to the car fax report the door lock was replaced 5 or so years ago. I assume it never worked right after that. I’ve tried all three keys (two normal keys and valet key). All work in the hatch and none in the drivers door.

The lock can be rekeyed by a locksmith. Remove the lock cylinder and take it to a locksmith. Last time I did that it cost about $30.

Also, try turning your key over, 180 degrees. Toyota keys work in either orientation, but the tumblers are only at the top of the lock cylinder, so if you always put the key in the same way, one side will wear down and the other will be prestine.

The problem could be the link connecting the key portion is not connected to the rest of the lock. I had this problem after replacing my lock actuator. Didn't discover the problem until the vehicle battery was dead. I could turn the key but the lock would not operate. The fix can be accomplished without removing the interior door trim. I forgot the specific details but it involves opening the door, locating a plastic plug that covers a hole near the door handle. From there I think you loosen a screw to remove the door handle or maybe you can just slip the linkage back in place.?. I found the details in the thread about replacing the door lock actuator. It's an easy fix if that is the problem.

Not today, but last week... On January 25th my wife and I took an overnight trip to Julian, CA. It's a former mining town in the mountains of eastern San Diego county. As luck would have it, a major winter storm was hitting the area, so we were given the rare treat of visiting the mountains while it was snowing.

I put together a video featuring some highlights of the trip...

But there's plenty of beautiful, snowy scenery and interesting sights. I think it's the next best thing to being there, and I hope you'll enjoy it.

...I am fascinated up here in SW Montana watching dogs of all ages get turned loose in the snow....and become instant puppies again...

...I think snow has a magical component to all species...unless one lives in an inner-city environment...and only sees the bad side of snow?

...Glad you and your wife managed to get back to Julian again, as I know it's a special place for you two...and any joy right now should be treasured!

I installed the MESO Customs puddle lights today. They are way brighter than factor. The install isn't too hard either. I'm a little disappointed with the fitment against the rest of the plastics but it's fine, nobody is ever going to look closely at it. I also installed a URD MAF sensor calibrator. I put rivnuts in the firewall behind it rather than putting sheet metal screws through. It's much easier to take off the air pump if you have it to get to the connector, just three nuts and two bolts on a hard line on the passenger side and you can move it to get to the middle cylinder connector. I'll report back in a couple weeks with any perceived results.
