What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Do you really think a 10ply tire would have prevented that puncture?

Are E tires more puncture resistant then C tires is the question that needs to be addressed. That answer is yes they are. I would have had a better chance of driving away from that contact had I had E rated tires. Would E rated have also been pierced in that situation? I can't tell you for certain but it would have given me a better chance. That rock is huge and I'm guessing very pointy. lol

I wheel where punctures are a fact of life. I've seen WAY more C rated tires down on the trail then E rated. In my personal wheeling I've had 3 C rated tires with either punctures or sidewall pinches that went down on trail. I've had one E rated tire go down. That was from driving over a nail om a job site, not on trail. I'm an E guy. lol

I understand what you're saying. E load name brand tires are usually a 10 ply tread vs 6 ply on a C load.
By the size of that rock I would have guessed any AT tire would have been punctured. Were you aired down at all? Usually that helps the face flex around any sharp rocks.

I was aired down to 25psi. Once I get the tire off the rim I'll post up some photo's of the rock. In the meantime, Ridge Grappler 295/70r17 E should be here by the end of the week. That was a nice chunk of change but I'm stoked to get them and the new rims on the rig.

Cruised up into the Inyos and did a quick tour of Papoose Flat, Badger Flat and Mazourka Peak with the wife. All told about 50 miles of dirt. The 8 miles stretch from Papoose to Badger is the crux. Lots of exposed sharp bedrock.

On the way down Mazourka Canyon Road my wife looks at me and said "Do you hear that?" I turned down the tunes and heard the hiss, nothing, hiss, nothing, hiss. That sound can only mean one thing. There's a rock in the tread. When sidewalls slash they just hiss and usually go down really fast. A rock in the tread does the hiss, nothing routine. Shit.

I'm still at least 8 miles from pavement at this point. I pulled over and took a look. Yep, it's a rock and it's huge. No patching that thing. Right at that time I realize I never put the spare lowering tool back in my rig after I finished the sound deadening. Double shit.

I break out the 1/2 socket wrench and sockets and get the lugs loose. I get the hi-lift down and chock to tires with some rocks. Then I look for something, anything, to lower that damn tire. The only thing I have is a pair of channel locks.

I grab the channel locks and jinga my arm into position between the tire and the hitch. Looking through the hole of the spare I manage to get the channies on the lowering unit. I get maybe 1/4 turn and they fall off. Repeat that for about 5 minutes and I've managed to lower the spare about 1/8". Triple shit.

Just then my wife spots a Jeep Cherokee coming down the trail. The driver pulls in behind me and offers to assist. I explain the spare situation and he grabs his tire jack handle. It's not flat like Toyota's but it fits in the hole. I push hard to make it bite and 30 seconds later my spare is on the ground. I thank him and his wife and he insists on staying with us until we hit pavement. Rad dude.

I put the hi-lift on the sliders and 9 cranks later the tire comes up in the air. Pull it and swap it for the spare. Tighten the lugs and reverse the hi-lift. Everything goes perfect. The couple follows us to pavement and I thank them and offer cash, beer, dinner. They politely refuse and his wife just says "Pay it forward." That's something I always do anyway so I tried to sneak him a 20. Nope. We shake hands and part ways.

For the last week my wife and I have been arguing about me spending money on tires. They weren't really needed she said. These tires are small and C rated I'd say. They still have tread she'd say. Finally I just gave up. On the way home she looks at me and asks why E rated tires would have possibly held up better in this situation. I explain that.

About ten minutes later she gives me the OK on the new tires. I've never been so happy to get a flat in my life. So the irony here is pretty obvious. Also look at the names of the places I visited today. I made parts of them bold to help the slower folks. lol

So enjoy some photo's and I'm off to the web to order some Ridge Grapplers.:guitar2:
Looks like a little more meat would have been good also, i don't like being off road with not so much tread.

That's what I was thinking. Looks like they were pretty shallow. From what I've heard, A/Ts are done around 5-6/32". That's where my BFG KO2s are at, after only 72k miles.... Won't be getting them again. Nothing wrong with them except the price. They cost me 830 to have installed 2 years ago, now for the exact same tires they are well into the double digits. Guess I'll get some more Falkens.

And where were you two when I was arguing with the wife last week? lol

I'll be glad to have a fresh set on there soon. The fact that they're bigger and E is just a bonus. A bonus that will "force" me to buy that rear swingout bumper to hold the spare.

Check out tires-easy.com that's where I got mine from (less than discount would match!) and they were on my porch in less than 24 hours.

Thanks man but they're already ordered from Amazon. I just added them to tire-easy to compare prices. Amazon was cheaper by 75 bucks. Plus I'll get 5% cash back on my card. They'll ship Monday and be here Thursday.

Justa heads up...

i have stock rims tacoma rims with the 'rugged trail' oem tires, I have aired down to 12psi

I had stock 99 5 star rims with el-cheapo discount tires I have aired down to 12psi... I think I even went 8psi by accident on the rear...

I have yet to loose a bead... and the ride is night/day difference from 19psi to 12psi imo... especially on C rated

your 25 psi could have added to the puncture... just don't be afraid to go to 10psi... be afraid to go lower than 10 on rocks... I've been told on snow with no bead locks, you 'could' safely go to 5psi... but I don't think i could... lol

I now have 285/70/16 nitto trail grapplers, and air them down to 10psi for every trail. they are E rated, and still stiff... it feels closer to 20psi on C rated... i need some bead locks.

anyways, grats on the tires.

Not a bad junkyard lift for $100 and half a days work. Amazed with the ride waaaay better than the stock setup. Didn't measure the lift before and after but gained about 1.5 - 2 inches at least.

I did a lot of little things. Worked on the cargo box some more. Mostly just cleaning up the wiring and such. Major project I did was turn my transmission cooler and fan around so the fan was in the back (so it wasn't blocking airflow). Had to move it over and cut longer hoses, because it didn't want to fit behind the grill. Finally got it all secured and tight. Stood back and began to feel good about myself....

Then CRAP!!!! Where it's at won't work because next month I plan on fixing my bumper and raise it up due to me adding my body lift. I think I'll look at it tomorrow and see if I can rotate it 90* and see if I can get it to fit.

After that, I started to rip all my old wiring out of my engine compartment passing through my firewall. From old lights, electric fans, a little of this, a little of that..... Since one of my Lightforce lights has a housing that's broke I even took that wiring out as well. Might as well start from scratch once I get my switches put in (which should be next week)

So all in all, I got a lot done.... Just didn't FINISH a damn thing.

theesotericone any closer pics of your new Relentless bumper out it he wild? Still trying to decide on a font bumper and I'm stuck between yours (Summit version), AOR or the AP ones.

What did you do to your 3rd gen today?

Started driving it more now, daily started acting up. Sucks since it's not even paid off [emoji30] but I'm really loving the Runner.

Installed some used stock shocks and springs I bought from Craigslist for the meantime. The ones that were on it were shot and looked like they were the originals. Rides so much better and fixed the saggy booty. Going to start a part list of suspension parts I'm going to replace or upgrade now.

Stock upgrades

Hey everybody, I have a 1993 Toyota 4Runner that is bone stock and I would like to start upgrading it piece by piece. I have little knowledge in mechanics but I am a quick learner and willing to tackle on any project that comes my way. Couple questions. First how big of rims/tires can I put on it stock without having to lift or buy wheel spacers? What are some engine upgrades that I can do to make it run better and faster? What's the best engine swap I can do? I know the 22re is highly sought after but I was talking with someone that recently put a v8 in his. I didn't get to talk with him for very long though.. Lastly what's the best place I can buy parts online?? Any info is greatly appreciated! Thanks and have a great day!
