What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Got snowed out at work today so I took care of some stuff around the house. Part of that was a trip to the hardware store to get some metal z60 grinding discs. I'm repainting the fascia and decided to strip it completely. Those things are the best paint remover around.

Anyway, on the way home I spotted a 98 Desert Dune parked in the local for sale spot. I whipped a u-turn and checked it out. It's 4wd Auto with 257,000 miles on the clock. Guys asking $3500/OBO. It's got faded paint. A really small ding in the rear hatch that someone tried to patch. The ding probably looked better. Passenger upper cv boot is torn and it's got the usual oil leak from the valve covers.

I'm thinking about calling the guy and taking it for a spin. I don't really need another rig but I could just give it to the wife and get my rig back. lol

Sounds perfect for you. Those issues seem like they are all within your wheelhouse. I imagine before too long you will have another solid looking 4runner in your stable. Lol. Would she give you the built one back, or would she tell you to mod your own? Hahahaha.

Yesterday actually, but got the Borla Muffler installed. Been waiting 8 years for mine to finally start to come apart so I could order a new one!!!!

I got the XR-1 40942, and I really like it. You have no idea how many You Tube clips I've listened to over the years and how many notes I've taken to narrow it down to this one. Glad I did though!

Haha! Research pays off. I figure if I ever go to replace mine, others have done a lot of the hard footwork in the research Department. Just another great reason to love this forum.

Although... I've probably spent more money on vehicles in the past 2 years or so then the last 10 or 15. Hahahaha.

Added up all of the receipts in the folder since I got this rig 7 weeks ago. Honestly, I think I would have been better off just spending the money ( that I didn't want to spend) and buying a nice one from the start. The only good thing about mine is at least I know that certain big jobs are done and shouldn't need any attention for a long time.

Wow, super nice. I need tires but will try and make it through the winter. Can you please explain to me the steps to greasing of the drive shaft. In Reverse, and its not all the time, but sometimes it feels like it binds up and does not want to move, even after giving it some gas it will shudder. I have to put into forward then back into reverse for it to back up smoothly. Unless I have a different issue altogether.

Thanks!

Check out the post below. My driveline was kluking when slowing down from highway speeds. It was the NO7 zerk that I had to fill with grease. It took well over 30 pumps the fill the slip joint before I saw it move. The rest of the fittings took 2 pumps before old grease came out. There is another slip joint (NO2) on the front shaft too.

Finally got to the steering rack bushings today. I used Timmy The Toolman's video as my reference. I did not separate the tierod from the steering knuckle, although I will say it will make the job a little bit easier.
I'm @ 233K and this definitely made a difference... I'm going to do the steering guide next at some point and see if I can tighten up the feel even more. I'm sure it's worn as well.
BreakFree and a soft copper brush made short work of cleaning out the old dirty bushing spots. Only part not looking the best is on the far right where the bushing wraps around. Kind of a nasty rust spot going on there for the last 15 years or something... clean it and dried it super well and coated it with Mobil1 synthetic grease... look mostly surface with a small amount of corrosion going deeper but I think it will be fine.

What grease did you use for the NO7 zerk fitting? Good info, thanks.

Would she give you the built one back, or would she tell you to mod your own? Hahahaha..

That's a damn good question. As much as she gives me shit for spending time working on it and spending money on it, she sure does love driving it. All her friends think it's hers at this point. lol

Drove it to Firestone to get some trailer tires rebalanced and walked away amazed by the amount of BS or false information that is still thrown around in there.

Care to elaborate?..

Sir, there is no possible way to know what the check engine code is telling us if the light isn't on. Sir, you have to use this specific size tire or any warranty on your 2016 4runner will be no good. Sir, every time you change your tires on said 4runner the TPMS sensor must be changed. Miss, if your tires are underinflated they will rip apart soon.

I almost spoke up on this one: Miss, it is standard procedure to get a new alternator at the same time the serpentine belt is changed....:loco:

There was more but the point should be made....:thumb:

Got my truck back from the body shop last night, hard to inspect in the dark but what's done us done; the paint match is close enough.

They used all genuine Toyota parts and with the exception of the liftgate, all new parts. I even got all my old parts back. They washed the truck and slathered the tires with armor all, which I promptly washed off with degreaser and dish soap. I hate armor all. Armor All is to tires what Soul Glo is to couches. Lol

I'm genuinely surprised and very happy that they fixed the truck and didn't total it out. Between a $3,500 body shop bill and a rental car for 12 days I'm pretty sure the wholesale vale was surpassed; but whatever. I'm back in my ride and off to Reno.

I recently got back up lights like yours, have not installed did you wire them into your regular back up lights or a toggle, if wired into your regulars, how did you do it?

and maybe the way the light is hitting your truck the tailgate looks a different color

I spliced into the backup light wires on each side (my reverse bulbs are LED so the total load is darn close) and ran a water proof harness down, catching ground off the frame. The lights themselves are mounted to existing holes in the stock bumper. The whole setup cost about $25 not including the LED backup bulbs I put in the tails first.

Bad lighting in that photo. I'll take some better pics in flat light.

I hate that stuff. I worked at U-Haul a long time ago and they'd put it on the tires to make it look like the truck was well cared for and they all started cracking.

They've supposedly reformulated it from being solvent-based to now being water-based. The solvent is what caused the damage.

I still hate the stuff; its not just the fake, slippery look, it's the smell

yep I already did the led in the back up lights, that was a help, but I want more.

I fabri-hacked a big ass spanner wrench to hold the harmonic balancer so that I could check the torque on the bolt. Sure enough, it was no where near properly tight. I test drove a 4th Gen today and really liked it, but damn those things are still expensive for a 10 year old vehicle.
