What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

The past 4 weeks I have gotten around to some overdue maintenance...

Changed the timing belt, water pump, hyd tensioner and related bearings/idlers, flushed PS system, plugs and wires, cleaned throttle body, oil change....

I'm chasing down a mystery condition present before any of the maintenance above. When I accelerate heavily, near WOT the engines bogs and stutters, the car does not accelerate. This mystery throws no codes or CEL, can't seem to figure out the problem. Coil packs seem good in that I can hear the spark jumping about an inch when the boot is pulled away.

Would love suggestions to resolve this... new member, can't post a thread yet.

Toyota parts supplier …….

just placed a big order for projects...Ive used camelback in the past and never had a complaint, but someone recommended on the forum McGeorge Toyota. So I compared. You have to pay shipping, but even with that the order came in about 80 less than camel back even with the camelback free shipping and discount code.

(was gonna bring it a month ago then I got the codes of knock sensor out 2 days before I was gonna originally leave, did not want to be on the road and have them crap out big time and put me into limp mode, so had to fly up for now to start work on a project)

Changed out my solenoids the other day, had a po770. Flushed with 12qts of Castrol Import ATF. At only 116,000 miles I am not sure this transmission has ever shifted as well as it does now, dating back to 2006.

Also ordered a bunch of new vacuum hoses and the heater core, non rear heater, hoses for install next month.

Last month replaced all three coil packs. Had a very small tear in the boot. A much smoother idle now.

Hope to keep the 4Runner until it is least thirty years old.

Got new tires, they rubbed so I chose to take the step off and I'm liking the look of it now

Update: still rubbing thinking of a suspension lift or a leveling kit. Not sure yet cause I wanta take her Wheeling this summer

This will be the 3rd set of LBJs on the 4runner (4th in you include the original ones). Got some new outer tie rod castle nuts too. Also got a new battery clamp, I had tried re-painting the old one with rustoleum hammered but didn't like how it looked and the part was only $17, and has the little rubber pads that had fallen off the old one. And got the o-ring from Tim's power steering flush/cleaning video for when I get around to that job.

Got my hands on some brand new in box 5th Gen rear springs, to give my truck a mild "lift". Gained about 1" on each side, from 20.75" to 21.75", which is about what I wanted. Now the front seems to be begging to be slightly higher.

Old and new springs (3rd Gens are actually longer, but significantly less stiff with the thinner wire diameter and more colis:

Not a huge lift by any means, but I like it.

Thanks - not sure what my next step with suspension will be. I'm sort of at an impasse in general - I love the truck, and it has been really good to me, so I want to give it some love, but not sure where to start.

I think my next step will be paint for the cladding (haven't yet decided on white or silver), and depending on how that looks, I'll have to do something about the wheels. But I don't know yet if I want to stick with 16" (since the tires are nearly new), or go for some 17" TRD wheels. So I am paralyzed by indecision, and am going on a three week vacation instead of deciding.

Let me know if you think of the cooler question!

Did that a few weeks ago, rounded the head on the rear hydraulic tensioner bolt... ended up having to remove the AC compressor and bracket to get it out.

Not fun.

I think it was concerning how you had it mounted but can’t quite remember. Can’t be too important.

I’d keep the wheels unless you find a good deal on those 5th gens. Painting those caps are easy. Your rig looks great. If those previous cretinous owners only knew how much effort you have put into it.

Tried out that turtle wax cloth interior cleaner today on my seats. Stuff is seriously awesome. If you’ve got cloth seats that have some stains on them, I highly recommend giving this stuff a try. Wish I would have taken before and after pics.

Thanks! Those wheels are really badly corroded and pitted though, so I'd need to either paint them or get something else. I don't really love the style of these wheels, so I'll have to decide if I want to invest the time in preparing them for paint, or just get something nicer. We'll see, cladding is first on the list (after the vacation ).

A word of caution on this. The bristles on the brush are very, very stiff, firm and hard. IMO, soft-ish like a toothbrush would have been better. Be sure you know what you are using it on.

I used this on the headliner to remove a stain and did get the stain out, but created a huge fuzz ball. Luckily, I was able to correct it using a sweater pill blade (or whatever it's called).

Champion CC1998 installed as preventative (no clue on prior history), along with silicone hoses and Zerex Asian coolant. Still have to cut/bend the tabs that allow the radiator to hang there before installing bolts, and while the bolts didn't line up absolutely dead perfect I needed make no alterations to get it installed.

Yeah I definitely would not use this on a headliner. As with anything else, use common sense and don’t go too hard with the bristle brush! That’s my disclaimer for anyone that tries it lol

I used my '97 to pull home my new project! found a 1972 fj40 in a barn a few towns south of me. I poured some gas in the carb and threw a battery in it and it fired right up! it's been sitting for 5 years.
